Stomach feels "backed up"

Recommended Posts

I am 11 days past surgery. Every time I eat, my stomach feels backed up. Almost like my food takes a really long time to go down. It hurts a little bit. Even if I eat just 3 or 4 bites, spaced out. It takes me so long to eat just a few bites of yogurt. Anyone else experience this? I don't remember anyone telling me that this would happen, but then I wasn't exactly fully coherent before I left the hospital. It's making me nervous.

Of course, it's always best to give your doc office a call with any concerns. When is your next appointment?

I am 3 months out tomorrow. I have never been able to eat as much as most everyone else can. My food almost always feels 'stuck' for hours. No drinking for 30 min before and 30 min after? Ha! I can't drink for at least an hour or two after I eat anything with dense Protein involved.

I do have another appointment next week so I'll talk to my doctor then about me.

How big of a bite are you taking? Does Water hurt? Do warm things feel weird too? Sometimes temperature plays a part in this as well. Can you do Protein drinks OK?

I'm seeing the doc on Wednesday for my postop. My bites are very small (about 1/3 of a teaspoon) and I eat slowly so I space them out in an attempt to remedy the stalled food (to no avail). Protein drinks don't go down too bad but still feel a bit stuck. But i cant get even close to the Protein goal they want me at. Water doesn't hurt. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Has it hindered your weight loss?

it could just be that your stomach is still swollen, but are you constipated?

I'm not constipated anymore. I finally got a hold of that. I could still be swollen. I don't know how long it takes for swelling to subside.

You're definitely still swollen. It takes some weeks to start really going down. I was sleeved, and it took very little to fill me up (felt like a rock in my tummy, not sure if that's the same feeling you have. With RNY, you do have the risk of strictures. Let your doc know about your issues so he/she can decide if they want to do any tests.

Great thank you for the advice. I had no idea it took weeks for swelling to subside. Makes sense. But yeah it feels like a rock no matter how soft it is. I'm going to see him Wed morning so I'll ask to be checked.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
