Weight loss before surgery

Recommended Posts

First off I have Tricare as my insurance. My surgeon said that Tricare requires 4 months of nutrition appointments and exercising. I have lose weight but not telling me how much.

At the moment I'm 5'5 234 lbs. I have sleep apnea, hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

I have Tricare Prime West. Their requirements don't mention anything about losing a certain amount only that you have to have it documented for 3 to 6 months that you have tried and failed to lose weight. I lost only a lbs the entire 4 months I did it. I tried everything and the weight just doesn't come off, which is why I started this process in the first place. My paperwork is currently with the insurance right now waiting approval. I will let you know how it goes. Good luck!

@@kathileelyo I was approved last Thursday but am still waiting to get my surgery date. My doctors office is being ungodly slow and its really annoying.

Ladies, I also have Tricare. I found it rather easy, for approval. All I had to do is show I could stick to a meal plan, EGD done and Physch evaluation. Request a letter of recommendation for my prime Dr. It was fairly easy. The only frustrating thing is Dr.s and working around my husbands schedule. My Surgeon send my papers in on the 2nd and had approval on the 8th.

I wish you all well, good luck.

Tricare does not care how much weight you lost or if you lose any at all. They also do not require a psychological evaluation.

I did not want to pay the $288 that my gastric bypass surgery required for their classes ( I went to one and it was ridiculous I learn more from weight watchers) so they gave me the paperwork and I just took it to my doctor and we filled it out monthly, paid my $20 co-pay every month without skipping a month and brought the paperwork back to my gastric bypass surgeon when my months were over and they processed it. I save some money. If you need the papers I could actually send you a copy just message me.

Good luck and thanks!

I have Tricare and I had to have psych evaluation and I have to go to the surgeon every month for 4 months. I also had to go to the nutritionist on base once. I feel like this is never going to happen. I'm getting frustrated.

I felt like that at first too, kathileelyo! The waiting is by far the worst part and you get all these things done just to worry they will end up turning you down. Take deep breaths and know that even though doing all of these things sucks and it makes the process a lot longer than you want, that it will all be worth it in the end. I'm not sure why you have to have a psych eval when we didn't but maybe its the specific surgeon or the branch of Tricare you have. Either way as long as you do as they say there is no reason for them to turn you down in my opinion.

I go through triwest. My surgeon said I meet the guidelines. My bmi is 40 and I have type2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. My last appointed was in the beginning of August and now I don't go back to September 26. The only thing they have me doing so far is exercise. Meanwhile my diabetes numbers are going up with being on Metformin. The other day was 317.

The psych eval was probably required by your doctor or hospital but it's not required by tri-care. I know it seems so far away but it will happen. Take this time and spend it doing the things you will not be doing after surgery for awhile. Your going to be tired more and your energy will be lower.

You'll get there!

Good luck and thanks!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
