Diet questions

Recommended Posts

I had lap-band surgery a little over a month ago, and I'm thrilled. So far I've had maybe two days when I got a little hungry, but dealt with it. Here's my question: according to the dietician at my doctor's office, some of the things I like quite a bit that actually seem to fill me up quite a bit are things I won't be able to eat very often in the future. Is it true that, say, a bowl of oatmeal is something you can't have on a daily basis? Right now I'm trying to stick w/the recommended 24 oz of caloried food a day (and generally 600 to 700 calories), and I know that when I move to solids and then on to a maintenance sort of diet, the calorie count will be somewhat higher. I'm having a hard time dealing with no more tall decaf/non-fat/sugar free hazelnut lattes and no more oatmeal, but if those things will make me hungry, I'll give them up in an instant. Am I not hungry now eating these things because I'm still recovering, or is that edict not carved in stone?

With time you will find what works for you. LOTS of people eat oatmeal in the AMs. I think if you pick a number and don't go over that many calories a day, the rest will fall into place. There are no bandster rules, there are only bandster guidelines. You need to find what works for you and stick with it.

Thanks! I kind of hoped it wasn't carved in stone that I could rarely eat something that wasn't "hard" again.

BTW, I won't be totally off soft foods for another week or so and wonder...is my lack of hunger due to what I'm eating (or not), or because I'm still healing? I would love it if I were one of the few who didn't even need a band fill...at least not right away

What was your experience?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
