Liquid diet and restriction

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I wasn't able to locate it in the search...

Is it normal to not feel restriction during the liquid phase? It makes sense that I wouldn't, but reading stories of others not getting in Protein and barely getting 2 TBs of broth down have me worried while I'm over here sipping along.

Thanks!

Yes, it is normal. liquids don't engage your pyloric valve and flow right through your tiny stomach and into your intestines. The reason some people struggle early on is because their stomach tissue is so bruised, inflamed, and swollen after the trauma of surgery. The fact that you don't have that just means your surgeon did meticulous work and you are a fast healer. You are experiencing a good thing, not a sign that your surgeon failed to do your surgery or anything like that. :)

Bufflehead was right on with what she said. I also felt the same way until I learned it was ok. I didn't feel restriction during the liquid phase either. Mine liquid phase was for 2 weeks. After the liquid phase I got to add 1 egg each day to the liquids for a week. Then moved onto soft foods. Once I was eating soft foods I felt restriction within 2 to 3 spoonfuls. It was a slow process for me to get through the other phase and learn to eat again. I am 6 months out as of July 26th and just now am able to eat 3 to 4 oz of meat and a l tablespoon of vegetables for my dinner meal. I am still drinking a shake or two otherwise I wouldn't get in all my Protein. Good luck getting through the different phases and I hope they go as smoothly as this liquid phase is.

I had the bypass and Im feeling something similar. If I have yogurt or applesauce, one or two bites and Im feeling it. Today I was having some broth while on the phone. I was super lazy with it, so I hadn't strained out the veggies, I was simply spooning around them. 45 minutes of gossip later there's barely any broth left ,and I start to panic. I didn't feel any signs of going overboard, I'm hoping I didn't do any damage.

It's never too late, until its too late

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
