Just wondering how all of you made your decision to be sleeved rather than bypass, I'm leaning heavily towards sleeve but find myself going back and forth

I am starting the process as well. I guess it depends on your weight as well. My surgeon recommended me for sleeve surgery because my BMI is 41. I was looking at both but I do not like the fact of "dumping". That just scares me! (Good Luck) Have you spoken to your surgeon yet?

I'm 295 and I choose sleeve because it seemed less invasive. Nothing had to be rearranged they're only taking so thing out. You also have dumping syndrome. With any WLS its possible but it's extremely common in a Bypass

I was leaning toward the sleeve and after talking to the surgeon he agreed. There are some meds I'll have to be on, pretty much forever, that would be adversely affected by malabsoprtion, so the sleeve was the only choice.

I agree it seemed less invasive and more straightforward my doctor also said the risk for complications is higher in bypass then with sleeve also my aunt had gastric bypass about 10 years ago and has been really sick also I didn't like the malabsorption Factor the dumping syndrome and the fact that it seemed like I would have to watch what I ate even more closely with gastric bypass like what if I'm at a new restaurant and it has something my new couch wouldn't agree with dumping syndrome byterrified me and the thought of my intestines being rearranged I didn't like that I am higher BMI patient BMI 52 but I love to workout so I don't see this being an issue but that is what led me to my decision.

I was leaning towards bypass.

My surgeon had a number of serious, real deal, no kidding, rubber meets the road type conversations with me and urged me to reconsider.

He stressed that I'd benefit from the sleeve due to the ability to take the NSAID's and other meds for arthritis and pain in the future.

I listened to him.

I'm damn glad I did.

This is a decision that you need to make after much contemplation and accurate information shared by your surgeon.....seek second opinions (I did, too) and be informed.

Whichever way you go.....embrace that and nothing else. Stay strict to your specific plan and enjoy the results.

I never considered anything but the sleeve. It took me years to creep up to an "entry level" wls weight (BMI high 30's).

I had researched wls online for years and always got scared off by all the plumbing rerouting required. The more I looked at the sleeve, the more it looked like minor surgery. And clearly, after 6 months of healing I'd be physiologically normal again except my stomach would be the size of s skinny little girl.

Then at the orientation, it became clear that the sleeve would be better for people who expected to go back to drinking alcohol (me) and NSAID'S. I had fairly serious arthritis and knew I'd need Advil once I started moving again.

Finally, I was shocked at how minimal the surgery was. I recall being wheeled into the OR at 10:15 and waking up at 11:00! This was faster than my knee scope.

Good luck!

I attended a WLS seminar at the hospital, performed extensive research online and placed it in a 3 ring binder, assessed the pros and cons of each WLS surgery and selected what I felt was the best choice for me.

When I considered myself fully informed, I discussed this with my surgeon and PCP and left an open mind to their professional opinion.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
