Step away from the scale! (Said in a deep Darth Vader like voice!)

Protein, Water, Vitamins... it'll come off! Don't let the scale screw with your mind!

Stay strong! You will not fail!

I got my surgery done May 17th 2016... I have lost 42lbs so far. I stepped on the scale on Sunday and I was down to 183.1, so beyond excited to see that number. Today I stepped on scale (same time every day) and I am at 186.2. I haven't changed what I have been eating, going on walks daily! Why am I gaining, I feel like I should be losing. I am going to Mexico August 5th, and wanted to be down to 170. But I know that won't happen now! Anyone else have this happen. I also, get stuck at the same weight for a week, then drop a pound. So it takes me a week to lose a pound

If minor fluctuations are going to cause you anxiety, it's best to just stay off the scale completely. Or if you want to be able to track progress over time, designate a specific weigh in day each week or month. Make sure the conditions of your weigh-in are the same every time. I always did mine in the morning, after I'd peed, before I ate/drank anything, and completely naked. Weighing once a week or once a month will not show the day-to-day fluctuations so you won't be driving yourself crazy.

Day to day fluctuations? This is like minute to minute lol. 5 lbs gained since surgery. Guess I "expected " the scale to go down and not up. I'm higher than I was on surgery day. ???? I need to break up with the scale, need to have my hubby or son hide it and bring it out 1 time a week on monday. I think I will do that today, better before I think I'm a complete failure.

Oh, if you are only a couple days out from surgery, no wonder the scale is going up. They pump you full of IV fluids and you probably have a lot of internal swelling going on!

LOL. You definately need to stay off the scale. You are going to fluctuate regularly. I actually laughed out loud at your comment about never seeing the scale go up again. I here to tell you that is NOT true.

I was a daily weighed. I weighed myself every single day following RNY. For me I didn't let it get to me because the reality is you are going to fluctuate. You have too much salt one day you will retain Water. It's actually interesting to track. I know from one day to the next whether or not the scale will go up or down because I weighed every day.

The issue with that is if you let the fluctuations get to you and are putting time boxes on your weight loss you are going to lose your mind.

You are not in control right now of anything but what you put in your mouth. Your body is in charge of when you lose or gain. Kind of like autopilot. All you need to focus on is putting the right things in your tummy and let your body take care of the rest. If you do that you will continue to lose weight (however some days the scale will go up....).

There was only one time when I had to put my damn scale away and that was in my 11th month post op. I had a 28 day stall and tried like hell to be patient but that one got to me. The stall broke but it was a very long month.

You have to decide if you can handle the news from the scale daily or not....if not just put it away and weigh yourself once a week at the same time of day. Or some people refuse to even weigh themselves that often. They weigh only when they see the doctor or once a month. If you follow the plan you don't need to worry about the scale.

And for the love of Peter, don't time box yourself. Your body is in charge and decides how quickly or slowly things will move. Time boxing weight loss can be one of the most demotivating things for someone trying to lose weight. It just is not good for the physche.

@@Express09,

The bad news is that your body is not a machine. The other bad news is that it is unlikely you'd have lost 13 pounds in the week leading up to your trip.

The good news is that you're going to Mexico. No more pouting. Have a great vacation. You're in good shape.

You haven't lost at all or just recently stalled? If you are following your plan - you should be losing. Is there a possibility you are pregnant? If not - you could be in starvation mode and that is why you're having problems and not getting your period.

Are you saying you haven't lost any weight since surgery and you have now gained 2 pounds? If that is the case, I think you definitely need to have a talk with your surgeon and/or nutritionist. While everyone loses weight at a different pace and you shouldn't set deadlines for your weight loss, the scale should generally be trending downward over the course of a couple of months. If it's not, there must be a reason and your surgeon or nutritionist can help you get to the bottom of it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
