Surgeons In Kansas

Recommended Posts

I live in Kansas city Mo, and am currently trying to find a surgeon. I know there are several in Kansas. I know of Dr. Malley, whom I haven't heard anything bad about, Dr. Nigro-whom I've heard nothing but bad things about and Dr. Augustin, whom I haven't really heard much about at all. If anyone has any experience with The Malley Surgical Center or The Weight Loss Surgery Center, please share. I'd like to know which doctor has the greatest success rate and especially which has the best Bedside manner. From what I've heard Dr. Nigro, doesn't have very good bedside manner, doesn't get back to his patients, and even almost lost a patient who had a severe infection from the implements used in her surgery and he was very cold and callus towards her. Please help. Thanks. :help::):)

I had my initial consultation at the WLSC yesterday. I wasn't aware of other clinics although I have read about Dr. Malley on the boards. My impressions of the WLSC was that it was very clean, nice, professional. The counselor/nurse that I met with was also a bander and she was very gracious with her time. She talked with me for almost an hour answering all of my questions. The finance lady is named Jackie, she is also very nice and even called me that afternoon to check in.

Since I'm going to need to self-pay, I'd also like to hear from other KC'ers on their impressions.

What have you heard about Dr. Augustin and Nigro? I don't know who my doctor would be, but am eager to hear more.

Haven't heard anything on Dr. Augustin, although I read his profile today. I have however heard very negative things about Dr. Nigro. I am part of another online support group through yahoo groups and there is a lady there that was a patient of Dr. Nigro and she's not recommending him. So if they give a choice of who you'd like as your surgeon I think I'm gonna go with Augustin if I choose to go through WLSC

Hi! I'm self -pay and I had my surgery in Mexico...much, much less and just as good of care! I will be seeing Dr. Malley for follow-ups and fills. I know someone who sees him and she says he is great. (she had her lapband in MX, too) There are two doctors performing wls at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, too. Their names are Hitchcock and Hoehn and they are the ones who are really leading the way in the KC metro area. They have a very comprehensive program for the whole person (nutrition, psych, etc...) but the complaints I am hearing are that it takes too long to get the surgery with them, sometimes more than a year. Good luck with whatever you decide!!!

:) :) :) :D:P:D:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Another doc you may want to check out is Dr. Wanda Kaniewski in Lenexa. I went to her seminar and was extremely impressed. The practice is a center of excellence, which I think is pretty hard to get. She has done over 800 surgeries. No mortalities and none of them converted to "open" instead of laproscopically. They have an awesome website with lots of great information. It is iabsobesitysurgery.com.

The best part is it is less than some others if you're self-pay. I think it's $13,500 for the band.

Good luck!

I had my surgery at the WLSC in Olathe, with Dr. Selim. I really didn't see much of him except for my consultation and my surgery (I live 4 hours away in Wichita) but what I did I thought he was nice. The staff at WLSC is very nice and helpful. And the facility is newer so it is clean. I have heard good things about Dr. Malley also. Good luck with your decision.

My surgeon was Dr. Malley. He is unbelievable. He is very quiet until you get to know him and then he opens up a bit. Great with his patients, let's you be a part in the decision making process about fills and such. He has great stats in the way of slips, erosions and other complications. His office staff is great with getting back with you and answering any questions you have. Just a wonderful experience so far. My sister also used him just 2 weeks after me and loves him also. She has lost 95 pounds in just under 6 months. Amazing!!! Good luck in your search for a great surgeon!!!

Another Malley patient here. Love him. Very good experience with him and his staff both pre and post op. I was self-pay and I paid 17,500. Would highly recommend him.

I'm another Malley fan!!!!!!!!!!!!! However if you are self pay you might want to check out Tallgrass in Topeka... several here have used them and are happy with them.... and self pay is somewhere around 11K

GOOD LUCK!

Just an update... met with Dr. Selim at the Weight Loss Surgical Center for my Pre-Op yesterday.

The Doctor is from Egypt, and when he began speaking with some broken English, internally I started to roll my eyes. And that's a bad habit for me which I fully admit. Plus, he was about an hour late, which is understandible because he was driving from Lawrence to OP.

However, he was very well spoken, had a sense of humor, and was really able to set our minds at ease. That's really all anyone wants in a Doctor.

I would say our experience with him has been positive. I'll probably see him just that one more time, but that'll be a biggie!!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
