Getting sick of protein shakes--literally

Recommended Posts

I am on my fourth week post op (June 21 surgery) and I have been doing fine on Protein Shakes until the last few days. My diet plan called for two weeks of liquids followed by two weeks of purée (but no meats and no eggs). With two Protein shakes a day, I was meeting my protein goal (getting close to 70 g). Now I dread drinking them. I get nauseated while drinking and even gagged this morning. I used to be able to drink all 8 oz and now I am lucky to get six in before giving up. I do the purée food at each meal but the only way to get the protein in is through the shakes. So I am pretty frustrated. Any suggestions? I do have lift drinks but not a huge fan and it takes me a long time to work through them. I have also done a scoop of GENEPRO in unsweetened iced tea.

I'm feeling you...my surgery was June 21st as well, and I'm only using RTD Protein as Creamer in my Decaf coffee. I'm adding a scoop of GENEPRO to my coffee, so that gives me 30g plus maybe 5g from the RTD at Breakfast. I either drink a Syntrax nectar (23g) or add another scoop of GENEPRO (30g) to a glass of Water with some flavored stevia later in the day, and another to my refried Beans or Soup at lunch or dinner. That gets me to 90 or nearly there, so the third meal is just bonus Protein for my day.
I'm really impressed with the Genepro product, and I can't tolerate any of the Isopure powders right now :-P

Since you're on purées, have you tried making them with less liquid? They're a little thicker but then they're gone faster ;)

The only shake I can handle is Unjury. I have to use a quarter scoop of strawberry in with the vanilla. I also have unflavored if I need something boosted. Yes almost 2 yrs out and still using a shake. Mainly in morning and at times lunch.

My husband is a snack alcohalic, right now he's eating chips! Won't eat 3 meals a day, never has. So I keep fruits and veggies and shakes in my cupboard.

There is a lot of different Protein Drinks out there buttt you hav to buy a lot of it if it's powder, Unjury you can order 1 serving packs and try them all.

Gosh I sound like a Unjury spokesperson lol.

I really like the ProtiDiet juice concentrates. They are 15 g of protein but a nice tasty summery drink. Not thick at all or too sweet.

There are a number of low sugar Protein Bars with 20gr Protein each - try the ones from Think Thin or Pure Protein, for example.

What are you using? I was on the Bariatric Advantage shakes for my pre-op diet and it was the worst, couldn't finish them all each day. If you're on those I was told they are much better with milk if that's something you plan allows at this phase.

Premier Protein is what I've used since surgery, the vanilla were ok, but the chocolate is actually pretty good. 30g Protein for 11oz premixed shake.

I was using Optimum nutrition powder and mixing it with 8 oz of Water, sometimes 4 oz Water and 4 oz fair life milk. I have not been drinking them the last few days. I have been drinking one lift drink and one cup of unsweetened tea with a scoop of unflavored Protein powder each day to get to 50 grams and then I am getting the rest of the Protein through food. I am still checking out the other options though as the lift drinks are not my fave. Thanks again for all the suggestions! (Oh and haven't felt sick like I was since I quit the shakes)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
