Thought I Was Invincible...

Recommended Posts

So I know the topic of hair loss has come up a lot on this forum but I never really paid attention because I thought no way will that happen to me! Well at almost 3 months post-op it's happening. I'm getting several handfuls a day. Don't get me wrong I will wear a wig happily if I have to but for those with experience with this I want to know if anyone has actually lost all their hair or gone patchy?

I didn't lose any hair, but several people report Hair loss. Generally this will occur during the weight loss phase. Once you get into the maintenance phase, things should level out. Many report that the hair grows back at this point. So it is sort of a temporary problem. Make sure you are meeting your daily Protein requirements. A lack of Protein will make this condition worse.

In my case I have been using a supplement called Juvenon (available over the internet) for around 10 years now. One of the side-effects of this supplement is that it seems to halt hair loss. I am 67 years old and I began going from gray to white hair and also going bald around 10 years ago. When I began using this product, my hair loss stopped and it even restored a little of the brown color in my hair. I had to halt using this product right after surgery for a couple months (doctor's orders), but when he gave me the green light again, I was back on it. And as I said, I did not experience any hair loss from my RNY gastric bypass surgery.

@@smashley296, there are no guarantees, but you do look young enough that, as most bariatric professionals and patients say, the hair will grow back. (It's possible that older women's [people's?] hormones are as much or more the cause, in which case, it's probably gone forever. Not all older women are subject, though.) As James Marusek mentioned, it's important to get your full complement of Protein. Biotin is often recommended, up to 5,000 mg daily (many multis include it, so be aware of the total). It may or may not make a difference. Other products are recommended, but I can't recall offhand. Someone may come along with the info.

@@James Marusek, I googled Juvenon and found that it's a brand name. My guess is that you take Juvenon™ Cellular Health Supplement because of the Biotin. Please confirm. I'm also curious about the brown color that was restored. Would you say it was your original brown or something different and, perhaps, not quite what is considered a natural sort of brown?

My original hair color was brown, a natural brown. The supplement is called Cellular Health Supplement. I take one tablet per day. This was their original and only supplement when I started taking it. They added many others to their product line since. The supplement contains Biotin but its primary ingredients are Acetyl L-Carnitine HCI and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Several others on this board have reported using biotin but were not pleased with the result. So I think it is more than just biotin that is at play here.

My hair started coming out by the handful about a month ago. I got a trim with some layers to give it body and am hoping that it won't get patchy. My sister took me to check out some of the hair pieces/wigs but right now it isn't that bad. If it gets worse, I will revisit the wigs. Regarding the supplements everything I see on the boards seems hit and miss for whether they actually help.

My hair has been carpeting my carpeting. I've been taking Biotin (5000mg + whatever is in my multivitamin) for some time, but don't credit it with minimizing Hair loss or anything else. I continue taking it just in case it might be doing something even slightly useful. It can't hurt and I don't want stop only to find that it was, in fact, even minimally helpful.

Another product gave me the impression of slowing the rate of loss (it slowed a while after I began) is Jarrosil, silicon drops that come in a small dropper bottle. It was my RD who mentioned it. The dose is 10 drops mixed into 1/2 cup Water, once daily. Now that I think of it, I'll restart it.

That's interesting. I have not experienced Hair loss to this point. I have been taking acetyl l carnatine with alpha lipoic acid for more than 10 years for brain health Never thought it might help with hair. I don't take biotin but I do eat eggs quite often.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
