Premier protein shakes give me migraines

Recommended Posts

I'm on the pre-op diet and I'm worried I will be stuck with Migraines after surgery. Anyone else have this issue? Any alternatives you can recommend?

Great question.

I get migraines:

If I ingest anything with Soy in it

If I am deprived of caffeine --my coffee

If I am overly stressed

I take Replax for my Migraines which seems to help. I used to take Fioricet, but Replax has replaced it.

I'm thinking that you should probably ask your bariatric team now, before surgery. They will be able to make some recommendations for you.

Maybe something as simple as changing your Protein shake will take care of your migraines.

Feel better, Friend. Migraines are nasty.

Please, come back and let me know what you find out. New information is always appreciated.

I truly believe that there is an answer for you. :)

Too many fake sweeteners tenf to give me Migraines. Try a whey Protein that doesn't have sweeteners or is sweetened with stevia. I add Isopure unflavoured to broth and pureed Soups. Jay Robb makes a protien powder sweetened wi t h stevia.

Are you certain it's the shakes?? I had massive Migraines during my preop diet, too, but I'm pretty certain it was from the carb and caffeine withdrawals.

Best of luck to you.

I can't stand Protein shakes. Premier is the best, but I still hate them. I'm 5 days post-op now and I haven't had one, yet I've met all my Fluid and Protein goals. I'm drinking Fairlife milk instead! They come in chocolate, skim, 2%, and whole. An 8 oz serving of chocolate milk has 14 g of protein in 140 calories. It's just milk that's been super filtered, leaving it higher in protein. It's also lactose free!

Sick of creamy stuff? I'm also drinking nectar protein juices. The aftertaste is a little slimy (like a protein shake), but they come in flavors like pink grapefruit, lemon tea, fuzzy navel, and grape. I usually have one for lunch. You can make a packet in 8-16 oz of Water (I have been doing 12 oz), and it's 20 g of protein for a reasonable amount of calories.

Tired of sweet stuff? powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury makes a chicken broth Protein Powder. Mix in Water 140 F or lower and enjoy 20 g of protein in 8 oz of chicken broth. Flavor to taste!

Migraines suck. I get them with aura. Despite being on reduced calories and only having liquids, though, I haven't had one after surgery yet and I am having a period, which was frequently a trigger for me. Best of luck to you, and I hope my info helped!

@@milpreve Yes! Those options help! I'm afraid I will not be able to tolerate the shakes either!

@@DaisyAmy when I stopped the shakes the Migraines went away. Not proof, but....

I hated premier, it was so sweet it gave me a headache as well.

I like GENEPRO Protein powder! never going back to premier!

Yikes - I didn't care for the premiere shakes' taste but they didn't make me fell bad. Fortunately there are plenty of options these days, both in Protein shakes and Protein Bars.

I didn't care for premier, and I can't remember the ingredients. But I know that aspartame is a HUGE Migraine trigger for me. You may have a similar sensitivity to one of the ingredients.

We (my doc and I) used to think that the migraine meds I was using weren't working, when in fact the issue was that I was downing them with a Diet Coke, so I was piling triggers onto the meds. Once I stopped drinking Nutrasweet, the meds started working!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
