Need advice - luncheon Sunday - What do I do?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 3 weeks post op, and I will be attending a luncheon Sunday. I'm in the soft food/pureed stage of the post op diet. I don't want to tell people that I had the surgery. I don't know what food will be there. Do I try to eat a little bit of whatever meat is there and just be sure to chew, chew, chew?

It's a luncheon at a person's home. Maybe they will serve Soup, but I doubt it. I live in the south and soup is not usually served during our hot summer days.

Ok. I understand. Could you put maybe something like mashed potato along with something else on your plate and kind of push it around without anyone noticing you're not eating it?

Tell them you are feeling under the weather and not able to eat much. Then have a few mouthfuls of something that nearest thing to soft!!

Go enjoy yourself. Im sure there will be some kind of soft food for you. Don't allow your surgery to turn you into a hermit. Just have self control and pace yourself!

You could also tell them you are fasting. Don't compromise your plan for anyone, especially this early on.

Go and have fun!

I can see how it could be tricky. I like the previous suggestions. I would add that, from my experience, generally if you draw attention to what you are or aren't eating, people pay more attention it. If you have focus on other topics, people pay less attention.

But eat before you go! lol. Have some yogurt or whatever fits your plan before you go over there. Or, if you don't care who knows about your surgery you could call the hostess to find out what they are serving to see if there is something that you would be able to eat. Depends on how comfortable you are with that. But I would eat before I went, then possibly put food on my plate and push it around and then just tell them (if they ask) that I'm not feeling very well and just couldn't eat after all. But if they have something you know you can eat, then go ahead.

I would go and if there is something there you can eat then enjoy it.

Can you call ahead and find out what is being served? Is it at someone's home? Church? A restaurant?

You can always take a Protein shake or yogurt in case they don't have anything you can eat.

At three weeks I was on soft foods so it is possible that there will be something you can eat. If you call ahead and ask it will be easier to plan.

The best thing to do at this stage is eat before you go and bring a big bottle of Water with you.

When they serve lunch, you can simply take a spoonful or two of something and put it on your plate. Especially if there is something soft.

Then, jut push it around on your plate and join the conversation. It is really great when you realize that events like this do not have to be about the food. You begin to build new socializing tools. You keep the conversation going and people really don't notice what you eat or don't eat.

The other option would be to bring a dish along that you can enjoy and pass.

If someone asks let them know that you are simply not hungry.

It really is easier to deal with than you think. Also, you will be more worried about it than others will even notice.

Offer to help the hostess and your not eating will go unnoticed.

This happened to me 6 days post-op and I ate about 7 baby spoonfuls of the softest thing on the table. You're still healing and learning so enjoy, relax and have an amazing time!

There will likely be some salads there that you can mash up like a potato salad or bean salad use your fork and smash it good before you eat it. also you might call the hostess and ask if you can bring something it is not uncommon to want to contribute to a luncheon. Or just show up with a contribution like my mother said never go to somebody's house with empty hands :-) good luck. I had to do the same thing for my 30 year Highschool reunion that was just three weeks post-op.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
