Calorie Cycling - What sayeth the masses?

Recommended Posts

As the title suggests, I'm after some info re Calorie Cycling..

Has it worked for you?

Has it not?

Has it had the opposite effect to what you wanted?

Do you even know what the hell I'm talking about??

I'll take anecdotal 'evidence' if it's YOURS (not the story of a friend of a mate whose cousin's housekeeper's neighbour's sister's dog walker's uncle's housemate tried it and lost blah blah blah... you know what I'm saying..)

Yes, it's just another, possibly futile, attempt to break this f*cking stall...

Thanx to all in anticipation of your assistance...

Jason

Never heard of it. Stalls are common in gastric sleeve surgery. Some on this site have coined the phrase "Embrace the Stall". I had RNY gastric bypass and the stalls are less common. But I did encounter a couple. After RNY gastric bypass, I was restricted to 2 ounces per meal. Over the next year and a half that was increased slowly to 1 cup. Because of the low volume of meal size initially, there was no way I could get in the required amount of Protein my body needed from meals alone and therefore I had to resort to using a Protein supplement (protein shakes). But as my meal volume increased and because I concentrated on consuming high protein meals, I was able to begin to drop of the Protein shakes. So I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and finally eliminated them all together at a year and a half. This was important because the Protein Shakes do contain calories. Anyways this was the approach that I used to break my stalls.

I don't know what calorie cycling is. I CAN tell you that I don't count calories anymore, I only count grams of Protein, fats, and carbs. So much easier.

Are you suggesting that one week you do x number of calories, maybe on the high end and then the next week you drop it much lower, and then the following week, go way up again?

Yes, I tried it before gastric bypass surgery. It's the approach Chris Powell uses. I found it too difficult. As someone as already said I don't count calories anymore just Protein, carbs and fat grams. After surgery I got rid of all my books on dieting. Chris Powell's book was one of them. To break your stall you could try doing a day of Protein Shakes. I felt sick one day and just did shakes and dropped two pounds after being stuck for a few weeks.

It works but it has happened for me by accident. I haven't done it on purpose. It also helped me realize I just need to flat out increase my calories. This is why food diaries are so important, you can find the trends and the changes and learn how to apply them.

I am too active to stick around 1000 or 1100 calories. I am in the 1400 a day range and the weight is still coming off, right now at about a pound a day. I realized I needed to increase my calories because I went on vacation and lost weight.

Also I think carb cycling works really well if you are low carbing for an extended period of time. Not just any old carbs and a high carb day for me is 50 net carbs. I am usually in the 20-35 range of net carbs but if I let myself get a few more carbs in once every 2 weeks, it helps move things along. Good carbs, not trash food like crackers.

We are all adults...If this is something your interested in..give it a try. You can always get back on your plan if calorie cycling does work for your body

Some things to think about.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/hugo19.htm

This link was geared toward body building, weight loss and how to get though a plateau..

I never do the same workout...Your body becomes used to it and you wont make progress.

I use calorie cycling method for distance running. My activity level has me burning high calories and carbs to sustain my run. It has worked well for me. My weight has not changed. It keeps me in maintenance mode.

The carbs are at a higher percentage over Protein. When I'm not running, I have to detox off the carbs and go back to my baraitric plan. This helps me stop my weight from increasing.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
