Anyone else thinking prematurely to get rid of fat clothes

Recommended Posts

Basically I have a two walk in closets, full of clothes ranging from 14-18; a few 12s & 20s, (L to 3x) (mostly 18s and 2X). I have dressy, formal, business attire and casual.

I bet I'm not alone, you've gotten down to smaller size at some point in one of your million diets (I was a 12 briefly in 2003, regained to an 18, down to a 14/16 in 2011, regained it all back and then some). I literally saved favorite clothes with tags, or believed "some day....." While I have saved a few skinny outfits for over 10 years, lol, I've prematurely gotten rid of fat clothes only to need to go out and buy them again. Of course, WLS is far more permanent and this will be my final time losing weight..

So I walk into my closets and think, today would be a good day to start weeding my closet. Anyone else do this once scheduled for surgery?

For those losing, how quickly were you going through your smaller sizes? Is anyone boxing any larger size clothes away, just in case they regain?

the smart side of my brain tells me there will be plenty of time to clean out my closet while recuperating at home after surgery.

I got rid of stuff as I shrunk out of them. It took quite a few pounds to drop a size in the larger sizes, there are lots of threads where people talk about this so its not just me. Those sizes are more forgiving and literally can take 40+ lbs sometimes to drop one size.

Once you're Into straight sizes it's more like 10lbs per size or even less depending on how/where you lose. I had some sizes I literally just about skipped over and had stuff I never wore--never was a 10! Skipped straight from 12 to 8.

I kept one pair of my largest size jeans for the pix below and my favorite largest size top. Now I am wishing I'd thought ahead and kept a top I could style into a dress, the one I chose fits like a baggy dress but the style just doesn't work as a dress LOL. Passed everything else on to Goodwill and haven't regretted it! I am over 2.5 years out.post-194772-14674738195448_thumb.jpg

I also waited to get rid of them as I lost weight and started having them look ridiculous or fell off me.

I did have moments of regret just because some of those clothes cost a mint (had several fancy dress ballgowns due to black tie work functions) or I especially loved them, but once I drove off from the thrift store and got home the feeling passed. :)

I don't think I could have done it before I'd lost the weight. But if you are literally sitting there with two giant closet's worth of clothing in a range of sizes, I'm sure doing a preemptive weeding out of clothes that you know for a fact you don't ever want to wear again (due to cut or pattern/color or other factors that just mean they're not favorites) might be a nice thing to get started on.

Like @@jess9395 and @@FrankiesGirl I shopped out of my closet down through size 12s (the smallest size I owned).

As I lost weight, I moved the too-big clothes to a spare closet and started inviting friends and family members to shop there for things they wanted. I gave away all the others to our favorite local charity (a hospital second-hand store).

This is the first time in my life I gave away all my fat clothes. Doing so was a big commitment that turned out to be both therapeutic and warranted.

The big mistake I made: I thought when I hit size 10 that was it and invested funds in some good size 10s. Nope, wasn't the end. Then at size 8 I thought that was it. Wrong again!

C'est la vie. :)

I wound up a size 4-6 and 135 pounds. I also have a few size 2s that fit me great. Likewise, some of my size 8s are still good on me.

Funny -- I was just struggling with this yesterday. I'm a guy so perhaps some of the clothes are a little more forgiving but I have twice given away my fat clothes when I dieted down and was convinced I wouldn't gain it back. So this time -- I find myself reluctant to give away my bigger clothes. I like to think this is more permanent and I'm determined it will be, but I still find myself struggling with this. Mind you -- I don't have a lot of closet space either so I have to box up things if I want to keep them. I'm currently unboxing things trying to find clothes that fit!

I made this deal with myself: I'm keeping the next size up, and donating all the bigger things to charity. I'm only 2 months post VSG so I'm just getting to where I have things two sizes too big -- but that's really satisfying!

I have an outfit I absolutely loved from my skinny days (180 lbs, lol) (I think size 14, maybe its a 12), that when I thought my surgery was in January, planned to wear to my nephews wedding Sept. 10th. Now that my surgery isn't until Aug 10th, I'll only be 4 weeks out. I know what dress I plan to wear. Its one of those stretchy sleeveless dresses, I'll wear a light sweater because I hate my arms. But regardless if I have worn this dress when I'm a 14 to an 18. I think it says 16.

Years ago when a doctor put me on a liquid diet and phentermine, I lost weight so fast; I was also much younger and exercised like crazy. I'm old now, have not really done much exercise at all. I do hope it comes off quickly like most are reporting here,

oh man @@trekker954 you just reminded me of my secret stash of clothes from my skinny days. I used to shop vintage clothes before it was cool, and I have a retro 1960s sheath mini dress with rhinestones and fake pearls on it (it sounds awful written out, but it's really pretty and almost looks like a mod style wedding dress but in a creamy white) and a super adorable 40s style with a nipped in waist and cut on a bias so it is sooo pretty on. The 60s one is a size 10, so probably would be considered like a size 6 today and the 40s style is a size 14, so who knows what it would be today - maybe an 8 or 10?

All I know is that I've been carting them around forever, and I can finally fit in the 1940s style dress again, but about 10 pounds away from being able to wear it in public tho!

Can't wait!! :D

Once I realized I was gonna go through with the surgery (5 days away...eek!) I bagged up all my skinny clothes from days gone by that I love and put them aside. I have lots of stuff size 4 - 14. I'm a 16-18 now.

Some of them never really fit me and I just bought because I had to have it. I'm really looking forward to tearing open those bags. There's some Kira Plastinia in there, vintage Escada, filth mart, I even have some fur coats that I sized up and out of.

I also donated a ton of my fat clothes already. Clothes that I never even really wanted to own, but couldn't fit into anything cute and needed them to get by. So many of those. Ugh!

Oh and @@FrankiesGirl you have to post a pic of that rhinestone and pearl dress, it sounds amazing ! I have a long 40s style dress with a big pearl collar and sequins that come in on the side like a V. I kind of want to have it made into a mini.

I cannot even imagine the money I've spent over the years on clothes. I plan to retire next year and I likely have enough clothes for a while in smaller sizes. I can't wait to get rid of the fat clothes, I hated to buy, and hated to wear to cover up my stomach and butt. Especially those over sized tops and they are all so ugly.

Good luck with your surgery higher!!

I am three weeks out and went from a tight 46 waist pant to a 42 waist. The old sizes are far too big and fall off so I started a charity pile and anything that is loose goes to that pile.

I too had the multi-sized wardrobe that I have been "shopping" out of for most of this past year. I organized it in descending sizes, and as I shrunk out of a size, off to the thrift store they went. The favorite sweaters and a perfectly broken in leather jacket were hard to let go of...but go they did. I could weep at the money I have given away, but then the tears of JOY start for what I have accomplished. The thing that is nice about the descending sizes is enjoying what currently fits, but casting my eye towards what is coming up in several more lbs lost!

Even 2.5 years post-op and down 150 pounds, I still have all my fat clothes in the basement. I'm hoping I never need them but am having difficulty due to the effort needed to buy nice clothes in those sizes. Still, that's no excuse and I just decided that it's time to let go.

Me too. I have boxes upon boxes of fat clothes in my garage. I am just now starting to think about parting with them.

This is me! I've spent fortunes (plural) over the years with all the times I've had significant weight loss but then the subsequent "gain it all back plus 15 new pounds". I always gave away my fat clothes, until a few years ago when it occurred to me that I always had to buy new clothes every time I failed and it felt like a double fail. I have so many things I can't even stand to look at, things I bought just because nothing else fit and I needed something.

I've got about 40 pairs of jeans right now ranging from size 10 to size 24. I got rid of my 4-8 sizes years ago, figured I'd never get there again and if I did, they'd be so out of date I wouldn't wear them anyway. I haven't been smaller than an 18 in 8 years but I've got some timeless expensive pairs of 10-14's that were barely worn or never worn - I'm pumped to try them all on again!

I already weeded out all the ones with rips, frayed hems, worn down thighs, super stretched waists, and the ones that were out of style or the ones I never liked anyway, about 15 pairs. It felt really liberating!! I can't wait to get rid of more but don't want to go overboard till after surgery next month.

I plan on keeping my largest dress and largest pair of pants just for comparison, and not donating until I'm 2 sizes below just to be safe - like I'll get rid of all my 24's when I'm a 20, all my 22's when I'm an 18, all my 20's when I'm a 16, etc.

I'm exactly 1 month out. Getting so excited. Obviously I think about jeans a lot - I'm guessing I'm not alone here.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
