How active were you the days following your surgery?

Recommended Posts

I know everyone is different, but....

I'm having my surgery on the 21st, I have a client going out of state on the 23rd and I'm staying at her house to pet sit her dogs. Luckily, I don't have to walk them, they just play in the backyard. I'm really hoping I'm not in a lot of pain. All I really do is sleep over night there, I'll be home during the day (with my dogs). I'm just really nervous that I'm going to be in pain and uncomfortable staying at someone elses house the first week after my surgery.

I can tell you that when I came home from the hospital (I was there for 2 nights), I was able to go up and down the stairs to my bedroom, however slowly, and that being in my bed and laying down was a bit tricky until I figured out a position that was comfortable to be in. You will be sore that first week. Like my husband said to me, you have literally been stabbed in 5 different spots on your abdomen. They need to heal both inside and out, so yes you are sore. You will have pain meds, and I know for the first few nights, I made sure to take my pain med right before going to sleep. That helped a great deal to get quality sleep. It might be easier to sleep in a recliner or propped up on a couch the first couple of nights.

You should get up and walk around at least for 5 minutes every 1-2 hours after surgery. This will aid in the healing process.

Thank you! Recliner might be a good idea too so the dogs wont try to sleep with me. Although, I don't mind it... I know it'll be hard to get comfortable for a while.

I really had almost no pain. Just sore abs. It was tricky to change positions (e.g. from lying down to sitting or standing) because of my sore abs, but that was about it. I think I was more tired that first week than anything else.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
