Getting on the activity train.....

Recommended Posts

Because of the poor shape my body has been in for at least the past 6 years, when I walk more than a tenth of a mile my back begins to scream at me...

I've replaced shoes and that helps a little...I've tried just stopping and resting but when it happens the first time I know that it will happen at shorter and shorter intervals.

I need to know what I can do to strengthen those back muscles?

You may want to talk to a physical therapist and/or physical trainer.

My favorite exercise by far is in the water: aerobics, walking, jogging, weights, and actual lap swimming. It is easy on the joints and the Water resistance and support really helps.

It's more a matter of strengthening the abdominals, which do most of the work to support the lower back. Working with a personal trainer or a physical therapist will get you going with a full routine for abs and what comes next. You can also find lots of exercises -- in illustrated form, video and what-all else -- at sites like sparkpeople.com and livestrong.com. There are also lots of videos available at public libraries -- either in a particular facility's collection or through interlibrary loan. This is a good way to go before spending money on buying them for yourself.

Pelvic tilts are a good start, followed by bridges. Also wall slides. You'll find them and more easily. Remember that proper form serves two important goals: Efficacy and safety.

This above, the back hurts because of weak abdominal/core muscles. That's where you need to focus.

Options can range from a personal trainer to group classes (I'm a BIG yoga person but Pilates and many other group classes work the core), a gym with someone to show you how to use their resources, tons of DVDs available and free videos on the sites noted above but also on YouTube! Search for ab or core workout. Look for Erin Moetz/One Bad Yogi, she's my favorite!

I agree that it's really important to strengthen your core and hips. Those are the stabilizers for everything else! I second the PT so you have a solid assessment and plan since you are having pain/discomfort from walking. I'm excited for you to find solutions that work for your body! Good luck.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
