Checklist for AFTER surgery...

Recommended Posts

Sadly, after all the excitement and anticipation, I think Im going to postpone my surgery from (6/16) to July. I've been so busy fulfilling requirements and preparing to have the surgery that I havent done much to stock anything for after the surgery. I know I wont feel up to running to the store everyday and not even close. I also just dont feel financially prepared just yet, all of these Protein Drinks and Vitamins are going to take a pretty penny out of my pay!!

Ive been cruzing around Amazon, on these forums and other sites to see which Protein supplement I wanted to use as well as chewable vits. Right now Im using Premier and Lean Body which has 40 grams of protein. While Im satisfied with those I heard that Isopure was pretty good too AND the powders deliver 50g of protein per serving!!! thats insane and really I thought our bodies can only process up to 25g of protein in one meal and the rest gets expelled...is that true? if so then why does these supplements contain so much?

Whats on your shopping list for AFTER surgery? Where are you finding the best prices for your items? I hear creamed Soups are good, any specific brand? Ill be on straight liquids for the first 2 weeks, then puree then soft.

Honestly, i think a lot of us overestimate how much we need post surgery.

I think we still buy things using our big tummy.

Post op, you are so swollen and tight that you can barely finish 1/4 cup.

A 500g tub of yoghurt would last over a week!

I don't think 4 weeks would make much of a difference...

Do your research, invest in a really good Protein powder that delivers the best quality and amount you can afford.

And save your money on the extras... you won't need them.

I had a Protein Powder, some broth and popsicles. . That is literally the only things i brought in preparation.

At 5 weeks.... i still have the Protein Powder and the popsicles lol... i think i ate 4 in total.. 1/4 at a time

you don't really need that much post surgery for the first few weeks.

Thanks

My other concern was that my surgery was schedule too close for me to file for FMLA, so i opted to use 4 sick days. I work at a desk and sometimes do training's where I do have to carry equipment, set it up etc.

My NUT said that we can only process 30g at a time.

You are overthinking it. I did the same. All you need are Protein drinks, sugar free Popsicles and broth or Soups. That's minimal. I purchased all types of Protein powders which I haven't even used yet, Isopure which I hated. Maybe your fear is speaking?

Yes you need very little post surgery! when you move to pureed stage I loved the Progresso Lite soups.....I would puree the whole can and put about a quarter cup, sometimes even less in a bowl.....then put the rest in an ice tray and freeze it .......about two to three ice cubs was all I could eat at one time.....................and once I moved to real food the little ice cubes worked great to season chicken while it was roasting!

I think it's easy to be overwhelmed by all the information and the simple fact that we are in an environment that we have ever experienced. My two week post op is strictly fluids and Protein shakes, nothing else.

I was given a list of approved fluids (Poweraid Zero is my favorite now and plain water). Protien shakes must be unjury or Celebrate (I picked unflavored and chicken). Add two Celebrate chewable Vitamins with Iron and three Calcium chewables and this will be my next two weeks.

I had to get my mind wrapped around all this and that takes time. You too have to get to a level of comfort with these mechanical parts of the process. The emotional part I'm still dealing with. First emotional hurdle is to get through surgery this Wednesday. I have tried to rehearse trying to sleep Tuesday night, getting up at 4:30am to get to the hospital, checking in and the really scary part of going into the operating room. For me when I get scared/nervous I go over my list of medical issues all caused by my obesity and I then feel a certain calm and move on to the next emotional episode which most certainly will come.

If you don't have your head wrapped around all this process then by all means wait awhile. On th other hand if you are just scared then welcome to the club, I don't believe that will change, at least it hasn't for me.

Good luck to you.

I agree with the others...you don't need much post op...I bought all these different Protein powders and hardly used them...I resorted back to the premade Premier chocolate Protein Shakes that I like the best...I'm almost 4 months post op and I drink one a day and get the rest of my protein from food....As for vitamins...Flinstones chewables were my go to and really reasonably priced at Walmart. Good luck!!

I use bean n bacon, cream of chicken and potato Soups. Use a ninja chopper and mince you food. 1/4 cup of potatoes with Water. Stir and then mix with chopped foods. Last week I made ribs for company. Took 2 small rib and 1 egg-roll, ninja'ed it, mixed with mash potatoes. Nothing said you can have flavor with you food.

Just have to be smart and not go for big portions. Tonight I told my wife we getting Bush'S tender. Going to use ninja and mix with potatoes.

Got can of Tyson chicken. Going to boil 4 eggs and make devil chicken. I crush cracker (4) and mix then have dinner.

For those of you that are using Flintsone Vits, How many are you having to take per day? this sounds like a great alternative from the tres expensive vits and Im wondering if they could work for me as well and provide what I need regularly. Im considering either these or liquid vitamins, atleast for a couple weeks from when the dr. suggest I start taking them.

You don't need much Water, broth, Popsicles, Protein. I had to switch to Flintstones chewables could not tolerate the bariatric Vitamins.< br />

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
