What to expect two weeks post op?

Recommended Posts

I have my sleeve scheduled for June 15 and our family reunion is scheduled for July 1.

I know everyone is different but please give me an idea of how I will feel. I know I will be on very soft foods and that's OK.

Wish this could have been planned a little better but didn't work out that way.

At two weeks out, I was indeed on purees, but just a couple of days from starting soft foods.

I was tired a lot and did not have much energy. I could eat 1/3 cup of food and not much more.

The only pain I had left was just inside my biggest scar if I moved the wrong way or picked up something.

I still was only sipping small amounts, but frequently.

You will probably feel good enough to be pleasant, but don't be playing Frisbee or softball.

Have a good time.

nobody can really say how you will feel. Everyone's recovery is different. At two weeks I was on soft foods and felt ok but had zero energy.

Everyone is different. I'm 2 weeks out today and I'm on soft/solids. I had very little pain the first few days and my energy was extremely low the first week but other than that I've been out of the house doing things and have felt fine. My doctor said I had a pretty quick recovery though compared to a lot of people.

Good luck to you and I pray your recovery is also quick and easy! :)

Thank you for the replies. Meeting with Surgeon and NUT tomorrow.

Your replies and four friends that have had surgery has left me feeling I'll be comfortable to be around family, hey I think being around my cousins will make me feel even better.

I'm a quick recovery person as well. I had my surgery on the 5th of May, back to work on the 9th. Seemed back to normal 2 weeks post op but I know I was healing inside still. I had enough energy because I was boring my Protein levels. The first week I was not as energetic but by week 2, I felt great.

I see that most have share with you their great experiences. And had a lot of them have said, you never know how you will feel until you are going through it. I was one of the ones that struggled with liquids and food. Pain was another struggle for me. I typically one to say things don't hurt at all, the pain I experienced was challenging.

I do not want to scare you in any means, I feel that we all need to hear the good and the bad. I had my WLS on March 16th and I was completely not prepared for what I was going to go through. The last couple of weeks I am fully getting my energy back but I was not getting enough Protein or Vitamins in. Those make all of the difference.

I wish you all the best in your WLS journey and you will have yo share more of your journey and progress. I really hope my story was helpful and not too scary.

On 2 weeks I wasn't feeling so good, still tired and resting alot, I was working but definitely slower than normal. I was still on liquids with cream Soups, not until 3 weeks did I start having puree foods. I am 3.5 weeks out and now eating soft foods. Good luck, everyone is different, it's your journey.

At two weeks I was still on liquids (no way I could eat more than a couple tablespoons even at a month out). But I was sipping Protein shakes, juice, Gatorade, Decaf tea, broth, cream Soups, drinkable yogurt, etc non stop all day every day, taking my Vitamins and meeting Fluid and Protein goals. I was working 8-10 hours/day at a physical, on my feet all day job and went home pretty tired every night. So a family reunion would have been a piece of cake. Hope you have just as easy if a recovery and Have fun!

PS I don't suggest trying anything new, food wise, at the reunion. Would hate to have a bad reaction (from either end) in that setting.

Thanks again for the replies. Just got home from meeting with the NUT and the surgeon. I explained to the surgeon my concern and he arranged to bump my surgery up a week to next Wednesday which will give me three weeks and two days to move toward feeling better before the reunion. I know my diet will still be very restricted and I'm OK with that, just did not want to be hurting and not be able to socialize.

Thank you again for the help, feeling much more confident now.

Steve

I am learning this at this time. Your surgeon and nutritionist should be able to give you a list for the first two weeks. My surgery center has not even talked to me about week three and beyond as that will depend on how I am doing at the end of week two. I have learned every surgeon may have a different opinion.

Good luck

I attended a friends wedding ceremony (not the reception although I was invited) about 10-12 days out from surgery AND it was honestly exhausting. I know that my family reunions usually require lots of driving and visiting for hours. Plan to attend if it is local and plan to make a short appearance for 30 minutes to one hour. Also plan to bring your own food and drink. I don't leave home without my Vitamin Water zero in a beer style coozie to keep it cool. That way my hands are full and I am not tempted to pick up something to eat or drink that I shouldn't. And besides you will be in sip sip sip mode. Please do NOT plan to drive a long distance, bring a dish to contribute or stay all day. You might not be physically up to any of it. Just pop your head in for the fellowship with your family. Make eye contact with your loved ones and really focus on them (i.e. Ignore the buffet). And you will enjoy yourself. There is a reason that we take time off after surgery and it is to recover not to socialize or do a lot of traveling. That being said you will NOT be an invalid either. Just not 100% up to the full activity that you were pre op. Also consider that as long as you are on the liquid and purée diet you Amy always feel a little bit weak until you get back on solid food. Good luck and just remember to TAKE IT EASY if this is a local must attend event.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
