Hi Everyone? I am pre-op and trying to decide which surgery is best for me. I am really leaning towards rny but have been reading some horror stories about how bad the gas can be and that it is affecting people's social lives. This scares me because I want to get the surgery so I can start living life and don't want to be stuck at home because I'm full of super smelly gas lol

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. After surgery you will pass a little more gas than normal and your breath can also smell foul. But I wouldn't equate this with a horror story. This will ease the further you are post-op. Generally it might take about 6 months for you to reach your happy state when most of the problems from surgery have dissolved away.

I'm 9 months post-rny and I can honestly say after the first couple of months, all my gassiness completely disappeared. It was never really bad to begin with, really. There are definitely a few people who get it for months post op, and VERYYY few people who have it for longer than that. Most people return to a pretty normal state pretty quickly.

Though, I will say my breath is often a little funky. I still drink Protein shakes regularly and they can have that effect. I just carry around sugar-free altoids and I'm good to go. even if I had terrible gas and disgusting breath, it would be completely and absolutely worth getting my health back and being able to enjoy my life in a way that was not possible a couple hundred pounds ago.

I'm 2 months post op. Gas is not an issue for me in any way.

I am 6 weeks post RNY, I fart like a trucker, but that is only if I veer off course from my low carb diet and eat something with sugar. If I stick with the diet it is not an issue at all.

I'm one week post op rny and I am definitely more gassy but it is mainly just when I'm in the bathroom. It's not like I'm farting uncontrollably all the time. You know?

And I don't think my breath smells bad but I could be wrong on that one lol

Hey all,

I am four days post op RNY and I have gas in my stomach churning. The doctor gave me an Iron infusion while in the hospital and of course all the gas they pump you with to do the surgery

laparoscopically... However, I have had black diarrhea for the past two days. Did anyone have this?! I've looked online and many have said its due to Iron but I'm a bit concerned cos I am going about 3-4 times a day!

Oh I know exactly what you are talking about... That's the same diarrhea I had an accident with for my first BM, lol thought it was going to be gas but it wasn't, I had a post on it.

Some nasty stuff, I am not aware of receiving any iron infusion, I think it's just part of the gas and residue or something from surgery.

Mine finally went away, I am 8 days post op.

@@UsernameTaken - did you have to do a swallow study the next day after your surgery?! That horrific tasting stuff?

I was just reading in my manual guide that the swallow study can cause diarrhea due to the contents in that mixture.

Happy tooting friends! Cheers to the new life!!

Yup I sure did. That morning I was so emotional I cried... They are like drink more of this sudd, bigger chunks... I am like I'm supposed to sip lol then they lay me down and tell me to move to one side and to another, really? After having abdominal surgery? They made it seem like it was such a simple task... So glad when it was over.

And I think I got rid of it all by day 6-7th.

That stuff was weird, it was like just black residue that wouldn't flush lol

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
