after band before fill

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I was banded and on the purree stage but was wondering if before you get your first fill you can tolerate different food ex. bread, pop? Can eating harder things damage the band? I'm just getting sick of the mushy stuff.

Thanks

Kat

Hi Katt44, I think if you look into the threads you will find one called did you start solids early. Most of us did. I started with chicken and Rice Soup with some smashed up crackers which was yummy. I did have meatballs with sauce smashed up and ate very slowly and remember to put small amounts in your mouth and chew, chew chew. I was banded in April and cannot eat any type of bread whatsoever. I have crackers with almost everything. Remember you should call your doctor first and get their okay.

I just had the nutritional seminar and we were warned off bread and pop - they just don't go down well. Maybe look into it more and think about different options.

Cheers!

I have to ask, why would you want to? didn't you get this band to CHANGE your LIFE? To make positive changes and to eat BETTER? Why on earth so early after banding, and your rebirth so to speak, would you want to go back to that which has made us unhealthy? (Unless of course you are talking about a whole grain or cracked wheat bread with 7 or 8 grams-minimum-of Fiber per slice.)

And I understand you are getting sick of mushy stuff, I really do. I was just there myself. I wasn't perfect, but I tried really damned hard to stay on the diet I was supposed to be on because if I have a slip in a year or two or three I don't EVER want to think back and realize that by my eating early and not allowing that important scar tissue to form around the band to hold it in place, I may have contributed to that slip! All because I couldn't handle eating mushy foods for a few weeks? I dont' know about you, but I've been fat for YEARS, the post-op diet is only WEEKS. You can do it. Suck it up, pick yourself up and talk to us about how you are feeling, you will get through this! We're here for you.

I know there is a thread that polls folks about starting early, but it is still NOT okay if your doc said it wasn't. I think many docs finally give in and let folks eat because they get hounded by patients constantly that they want to chew something.

I'm not saying I'm going to eat bread or have pop I just wanted to know if they go down before you have a fill. I was 3 weeks on Optifast etc. and haven't done anything that isn't healthy, I was just wondering if I can have 1 piece of bread befor I have a fill and never again.

Hi Kat44. You can and will do whatever you want. Sometimes we just have to try and take the consequences. I love bread but I can no longer eat a bun or toast for that matter. I can eat well cooked pizza in moderation and that is how I get my bread fix now. I did the try and see and had to bring it up. Go for it if you feel the need and see what happens. You will find alternatives if it doesn't happen for you. Good Luck

I did have bread, and was able to eat bread before I was at my current level of restriction.

You may want to wait a little to try the bread. IIRC my post op package said to try toast first as it tends to go down a little better. At 3 weeks you are still recovering and I would wait a couple of weeks in the event that you have to PB it back up.

On the other side of the coin though, I would not plan on making bread a regular part of your diet once you are restricted. It just is not worth the greif.

Andrew

hi guys, glad to find some canadian bunch. i was banded by dr. yau on aug. 16. i am doing quit good so far except for moments when i miss some food with flavor. i am just so afraid of doing damage so i have strict to the bone. i pray that i get the strength to keep this up. i will love to start on the mushy stuff as soon as recommended. it sounds like the times before the first fill must be the hardest. thissupport does help.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
