I just had my evaluation about a week ago. They ask about your history with weight, support, how you plan to be successful, why you want surgery, etc. My Dr. asked what sort of things am I going to do post surgery that I don't or can't do now. The whole session lasted about 45 minutes. He also added some good advice about eating habits and how to be successful. It wasn't as useless as I thought it was going to be going in.

Well mine consisted of more general questions about why I wanted to do this, if i had thought throughly about the process and the life changes for myself and my family. They did ask me if i ever felt depressed i said yes but i honestly felt and feel my depression comes from and is caused by me not being able to enjoy my life because of my weight. I was honest and told them this is a step in a long journey in my over all heath. Good luck stay strong and focused no matter what they say.

I've suffered from depression for many years. Im concerned that i wont pass the Eval. Can someone tell me what it consists of.

Mine have started with a questionnaire sheet, followed by a diet history, and successes with those diets, and then a bunch of questions about your overall well being. You can expect to see questions if you've binged, throw up purposefully after eating, questions about guilt of eating, depriving yourself of food or Water to lose weight. Gauging your mood questions to see if you eat because of depression or anxiety as a coping mechanism.

Every psych Dr uses a different format, but these were some of the things I saw on mine.

If your depression is controlled it shouldn't be an issue. Take advantage of the eval and get any counseling suggested as it'll be easier to get things under control pre-surgery.

If you are under a psychiatrist's care they can do your psych evaluation. They just need to write a letter saying you are capable of following the diet and stable with your depression.

Are you being treated for depression? Being depressed should not in itself lead to your being denied. What is more likely to happen is that the psych eval will talk about how you are dealing with depression and your plan to address depression post-op.

Be open, honest, and very frank about your challenges and issues. Part of the reason for a psych eval is to help you identify barriers to being successful and how you can address those barriers.

I told my doctor I was taking Wellbutrin for depression. He asked if they were working for me and I said yes and that was it.

If you don't go - it'll be worse. If you're depression is under control with meds there's no reason that would exclude you from WLS.

I havent gone to the first one yet.

@@WhitneyMc Do you mean that you're not treated for your depression? If not - it's important that you are treated prior to WLS as it can be exacerbated after surgery (with the hormones etc). You don't want to have the surgery if you're not mentally ready. I am on meds for depression and my Psych Eval went fine. I asked for additional counseling for emotional eating since I had to wait 6 months for insurance approval anyway.

I mean i set up an appointment to rake about the recent loss on my brother but i think i can handle it. I just dont like the idea of medication (my brother over dosed) and it causes nervousness thinking about taking addictive medication.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Treating depression doesn't necessarily mean taking meds (although they can really help).

Counseling can be very helpful.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
