Anyone not have to do 2 weeks diet pre op?

Recommended Posts

My 1st Dr. said to do 4 Optifast shakes and one lean dinner meal for 4 weeks before surgery. I weigh 217 lbs. This new Dr. is not doing that but is doing a 2 week pre-opt diet. I'm hoping he tells me to do even less. I don't have a surgery date yet.

No preop diet for me. One day before of liquid.

I also wondered if that was ok- but I feel confident now that I've heard of so many others with the same requirement

Every surgeon has his or her own methods. That’s why it’s important to choose a surgeon with good results (good weight loss and low complication rates) and then go all in – trust your surgeon completely once you’ve decided on one. Yes, as you see, it’s not unusual that your surgeon didn’t require the 2-week pre-op diet.

I got clarity on this confusion by our program staff after reading so many posts from people having to do that nasty liquid diet I didn't have to do and hadn't even heard of.

Whether or not you are told to do a 2-3 week long liquid diet pre-op (or whatever you are told to do pre-op) simply depends on where you have surgery. Different programs/centers will have different requirements - it's just program preference. Mine (a Center of Excellence) required 10% loss of excess weight on our own pre-surgery, with Clear liquids the day before surgery. (ie. someone 100 lbs overweight would have to lose 10 pounds) IMO, that's a preferred option, certainly for me. I don't think I would have survived a 2-3 week liquid diet with a normal stomach. Torture!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
