How much missed work post surgury

Recommended Posts

I started back slowly after a week. I am a professor, so I was able to be fairly flexible. My main problem was fatigue in the afternoons. If your job entails manual labor, you will need longer.

if you have a desk job you would probably be fine after a week (assuming you had no complications) But if you can it wouldn't be a bad idea to take two weeks

just be aware that for a while you will have extreme fatigue. I was not working when I had my surgery and for the first week walking to the bathroom and back completely wore me out. During my second week I went to Walmart and had to cut the trip short because I just didn't have the strength to keep walking

Sophie, is the fatigue from the extreme calorie deficit or from the physical surgery? I've been having the same question on time off, I'm glad this was asked :)

I am a middle school teacher. I took 2 weeks off (total, counting surgical/hospital days). At the end of week 1 I was fine and ready to return to work, but I wasn't allowed to alter my scheduled days. :( I would have been able to return fully at this point, but the extra week was a nice bonus.

I took 2 weeks off for surgery, hospital stay, and recovery. I can say honestly I was probably ready to go back after a week, and I have a desk job, but I wanted to wait until after my 1st week follow up with the surgeon, and I still had the drain tube in at that point. I was not on pain meds anymore, but just took the additional time to rest. I was tired that first week back, but this is my second week back and I feel great.

My surgery was on Friday 4/22, I was back that next Thursday. So total of 4 business days off. I'm a project manager, so most of the time I'm at my desk or in meetings. I held up pretty well until about 2:30, then I wanted a nap.

You're not eating much and you're recovering from major surgery & a good deal of anesthesia. It's all of those. Plus trying to learn a new stomach.

probably both. Your body is recovering from surgery and you are running on a few hundred calories a day

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
