Pre Op Question - Needing Some Feedback Please

Recommended Posts

Hello All, I am new to this site and was hoping based on the great information and experience on this site I might be able to get some feedback. I am scheduled for surgery next week and I am wondering if I am realistic in my thought process. I have surgery next Thursday morning and based on my research I was thinking I would be feeling fine by the afternoon. I was thinking I would be able to walk to my son's school and pick him up by 3:45 pm no problem (it is right around the block). I thought for sure I would be able to walk him to school on Friday and pick him up, thought I would be able to drive on Friday if needed to take the oldest to work. I really thought I wouldn't be down at all, I have not scheduled any help thinking I didn't need it. Now that I have searched around this site I find that may not be realistic. I know everyone is different and heals differently but I would love some feedback on what your experiences were. My surgery is outpatient and from what my Doctor's office stated I will be in at morning and out by afternoon. Thanks for reading! :clap2:

Welcome and congrats. I am now 11 days post op. You are right everyone is different and some people on here seemed to have a lot of pain and discomfort. My experience was totally fine.....and probally more the "norm" (if you can really say that?)...........I was up walking a few hours after surgery......and taking short 15 minutes walks the next day. Not very uncomfortable at all. BUT....I would with all my heart INSIST if you possibly can to have a friend, neighbour or family member walk with you and to be available to help. I have to say I was quite "tired and a tad shaky" from being put under. After I went for my walk I probally sleep another 9 hours straight and was quite tired for several days......really truly.....you can't be sure how you will feel.....you better be safe than sorry........

All the best and keep us posted........

Everyone is different. I was banded on Weds. and sometimes I feel good and other times I feel awful. I can get up and walk around. However, I can't bend over. I had someone keep my two year old through monday since I have difficulty getting up and down alot. I find once I'm up I can stay walking but the more I get up and down the worse the pain gets. Although, the pain really isn't all too bad and I am hoping to be without pain killers tommorow.

Its better to arrange for help and not need it then to not have someone around when you need it. I haven't had my band yet but I have had laproscopic surgery before. And you never know how your going to feel from one hour to the next. Besides if you don't need someone to walk with you at least you have someone to chat with.

And since its not wise to lift after any surgery anyone with small kids needs to have someone close by. I remember what it was like to have a 6 year old and try to get him out of the tub without lifting him. (Ex refused to help) When he don't want to come out.

I'm sorry, but I have to veto the idea of planning to pick up your son from school the very afternoon of your surgery! i'd say there is a 90% chance you won't be able to do that (although you don't say how far of a walk it is). I went in for surgery at 9:00am and didn't get home until 9:00 PM! The effect of the anesthesia was the culprit...I couldn't stay awake! The next day I slept a lot, too. I don't think I could have driven and was taking walks to the end of my driveway and back was all I could do at one time. The following day I was much better.

Thank you all so very much, everyone's experience is of course different. I have never had laproscopic surgery so yes better safe than sorry I will arrange for someone to be with me and you are right the company will be nice to have at the least! Thank you to all that responded.

AzGirl-Hello, I am Angela. I am having my surgery the morning of the 17th. I also think I am expecting to be fine, but you never know. I am a mother of 5 boys and the youngest being 12 mos. My husband took a few days off work to help, but I hope I won't need more than that. Keep me informed of your process. At least you get Jello and cream of wheat. I am on a strict slim fast 4 times a day. I finally called my surgeon and said it was killing me and he said I could have some liquid Soup (tomato). I jumped all over that. I started to get weak and shake and have no energy at all. But you know what-I know it will be so worth it in the end.

I also would veto walking and picking up your son - my Dr. wouldn't let me drive when I was taking any pain meds at all - I waited about a week but even after 3 weeks I wouldn't want to drive more than a couple of hours.

Whoa...you are being AWFULLY optimistic. First off, after surgery you are going to probably be exhausted very easily...and be that way for at least a week if not more. Surgery is a whalop to the system and takes a lot out of you. You are going to want to sleep a lot for the first day or so. I would get help asap for the kids. While the walking is a great idea, I'm not sure you will be up for that so soon. You better be safe than sorry. This is MAJOR surgery. Do not take your recuperative period lightly. You may regret it BIGTIME.

I agree that you need to rest for a full day at least. You may be on morphine after surgery plus anesthesia takes a long time to get out of your system. you will be in pain even if minor. I don't really agree with going home the same day, IMO.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
