Lap-Band Port Pain

Recommended Posts

I'm post-op day 10, and pain at the port site has come back with a vengeance. Between POD 5 to 9 I was able to sit myself up from bed without pain and without pillow splinting my port. Yesterday I drove myself to my first post-op appointment, which made me tired and I had discomfort in my left shoulder and port site during the office follow up. Took a restful nap, and had a friend help me with groceries since I was OK'ed to start Bariactric stage 3 pureed. Exhausted when I got home. Ate half a cup of mashed potatoes and showered. Went to bed with bad cramps at the port site and woke up this morning with worse cramps, it feels like my abdominal fascia is twitching. Since the procedure I have lost 10 pounds and I can see the bump on my abdomen made by the port since POD 7. Anyone have their pain return or come in and go during recovery? I'm trying to avoid taking Tylenol #3, and I'm not sure if I should put a Salonpas patch over the port.

The left shoulder pain is most likely caused by the gas injected into your body cavity and will dissipate over time.

Port pain is very individual depending on where the site is. Guys seem to have their port attached to the abdomen just below the left breast and most women have it attached lower.

My port has always protruded above the skin and most members will say the same.

I've read several posts over the years where the port site becomes infected but your doctor should have noticed this when you went in for your checkup.

Hope all is well by now.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
