Went last week to a visit with a nurse at my surgeons office and am a little overwhelmed trying to get the right Vitamins. There are so many! And I don't know where to start! Any advise?

Hello, I had a 12 week required class before I could get a consult with my surgeon (which is when we get a date). In these classes, I learned about pre & post op Vitamins, as well as other important things. So I'll tell you what I am taking now, because I am still pre-op. Please remember, these are based on my blood work results. All my levels were with in a healthy range except my Vitamin D level.

Multivitamin **** Must come with zinc, selenium & copper. It also has to have AT LEAST 5,000 units of Vitamin A daily.

**If it doesn't have 5,000UI, you should take an extra 25,000 UI of Beta-Carotene twice a week. (I take it every 4 days)

B-COMPLEX **** Must contain 30 mg of Vitamin B1 otherwise known as Thiamine daily.

Calcium CITRATE **** Men take 1,000mg daily, women over 50 take 1,200mg daily & women under 50 take 1,000mg daily. Do not take more than 600mg at one time or it will be wasted. So I take one serving twice a day.

Vitamin D **** 2,000 UI daily. My levels were a little low, so I got a prescription for a higher dose that I take once a week as well as my 2,000 daily.

So.... To break it down.

8am - 2 calcium citrate

4pm - 1 Multivitamin, 1 B-Complex, 1 Vitamin D, 1 Biotin & 1 Fish-Oil

*Every forth day - 1 Beta-Carotene 25,000UI

*If it's Sunday - 1 prescribed Vitamin D

* I take Biotin & Fish-Oil on my own.

8pm - 2 calcium citrate

My doctor told me to take Calcium on its own because it absorbs everything.

For POST-Op ...I have a "super" Multivitamin ready for after surgery. It has Calcium in it already. It's called:

Post Bariatric Surgery

All-In-One

Multivitamin & Mineral Supplement

Tropical Citrus Flavor

chewables

Made by Bariatric Choice

I'm supposed to take 4 a day throughout the day. Plus a B-12 every few days. I am considering just getting a shot once a week for after surgery.

I'm sorry it's such a long reply but when I was looking for these answers, I didn't get anything. And i was also overwhelmed because I wanted to get it right. Now that I have an idea, I thought I'd share what I've learned.

Good luck and I hope I've helped at least a tiny bit. ????

Yes this helps so much! I just went to the 'class' at my surgeons office and it was maybe info overload because I think I left with more questions than I had to begin with. The Vitamins were the most overwhelming part for me. Especially after coming home and surfing the net for them... There are soooo many and my head is spinning! I did do my blood work that day as well so hopefully they will give me more specifics on my personal needs. Thanks again!

I take two flintstones complete in the morning by 8, I take a b-complex that dissolves by 8:30, then I take a 500 mg Bariatric Advantage Calcium at ten and another at 12. I also take a Biotin for hair and nail growth during the day but it's not required. I got these little tiny tupperware bowls at the dollar store and I fill them up for each day of the week then just grab one on my way out the door each morning. This way I know what I've taken every day. post-256922-14609879320324_thumb.jpg

I was advised to get chewable or liquid form for my Vitamins after. I currently take blood pressure meds and wondered what will happen post op with taking those? It is one of the questions I have for my doctor but wondered what everyone else had to do?

I'm so glad I could help. You can start taking the Bariatric Choice Multivitamin now if you want to.

I already had a multi and wanted to finish it and the others I have before surgery. My doctor also told me not to take children's, men's or any type of Gummy. I still have a month or so before I get surgery. I don't have a date yet but I hope it's before June 1. Anyway, have a nice day and good luck. [emoji2]

I take BariMelt products which can be bought in the BariatricPal Store or on Amazon. Just got my labs back and everything was perfect. Fairly inexpensive and seems to be fewer pills than some people take. Check it out

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
