@@madeline121 If you think that's bad, no one (except my immediate family) said ANYTHING to me until I lost 100!!!!

I've had the same experience. I've lost 53 lbs (pre and post op) and I've had a total of 3 people say something to me. One was a coworker and the two other people are people I deal with related to my job. However, I am okay with this.

I've only lost 20lbs since 3/18 that was preop and surgery was 3/30 people are noticing in my face but all I get is are you sick? they even went as far to whisper to my cousin and ask if I'm sick. I don't know why they can't just say you've lost weight congrats.

My experience....

People who knew me when I was fat, thought I was getting too thin. People who didn't know me when I was fat, have never intimated I was too thin. It's all about perception. Feel free to rant, but truly...it's not worth it. I couldn't wait till folks stopped talking about my size and three years post banded, I'm there. Yes...friends and family recall me heavier, but they have gotten used to seeing me my current size, which is great as far as I'm concerned. And folks I've met post weigh loss, only know me as I am now...which is also great.

I still weigh more than most people starting weights. At 293 pounds, there is nothing small or skinny about me. It's just freaking ridiculous.

I'm hoping people adjust sooner rather than later. I think I'm struggling to accept the changes myself as I have never experienced life as an adult under 300 pounds. I do feel like a stranger in my body from time to time. I think people's comments about are giving me anxiety or making me insecure. This truly is a mental process.

I am now approaching 70 pounds lost and I am frequently getting comments that I am melting away or am a skinny mini! It took more than 30 lbs for my loss to even be noticed, except that I think I lost all 30 of those pounds from my face! I am going to see a group of friends on Friday who I haven't seen since January. (about 30 lbs lost). No one noticed then. I will be interested to see what they notice now! :)

You know where you need to be to be healthy. This is between you and your doctor. They aren't a part of that equation so they have nothing to say about where you stop. Thanks for your concern, but I have it under control. :)

This! I want people to stop talking about my size. Don't tell me I am too thin now (I can assure you I am not) and the more I lose the more people feel they can ask very direct questions which are truly none of their business. I have a thick skin and I am not easily offended but lately people's questions are getting to me.

FYI....I went into therapy at 100 lbs. down as I had body image issues. Could not recognize myself and it was very difficult to be happy with the weight loss when I had these other issues. Turns out, I needed her help for two years as I went from morbidly obese to now being petite. I recommend it for anyone who is losing a considerable amount of weight as it is very much a mental thing along with the physical changes.

I first got my band in 2008 I was at 315 - I'm at 259 now, working on making it lower because last summer I was at 250, but had the fill taken out of my band to prepare for sleeve since I was having issues with food getting stuck and was told I had a small slip. I gained 20lbs - had them refill my band and I'm working on losing it again.

Anyhow, my point to all this - was I would go shopping for new tops with my sister and I'd pick out the same size I would always get before 3 - 5xs and she's like Manda put those back! you're not that big anymore! and she'd pull off a 1x and it would fit... I'm still heavier then I want to be obviously that's why I'm trying to get the sleeve done, but that really helped me to get perspective on how I looked vs what I was...

When family or people who love you speak to you in care--and listen to your response--I get that, and even appreciate it. When coworkers or casual friends say (unsolicited) things like they did to you, @her1981, then it's a different story.

"Thanks, I'm feeling great! But enough about me, lets talk about how much I think you should gain or lose!"

"Gosh--how lucky to get free medical advice! And to think my doctor charges me for his professional care..."

"Really? You liked that movie too?..."

Okay, yes, catty responses. All ones I can say with a smile and a laugh, instead of telling the person to back off and keep it to themselves, no matter how well-intentioned.

Just say-" Bless you" and change the subject. People that do not have a weight problem do not know what to say. Expect that, and you will not get frustrated. Best of luck to you

Or you can use "Well bless your heart." Anyone not familiar with the Southern use of the term, see:

It's cathartic for me to spew such language. Friends laugh when I toss out some words. They say it's so rare that it sounds funny coming from me and that the rarity makes it all the more effective. I think my mouth has been pottier in BP than it has in the past three years everywhere else.

Yeah don't listen to people who tell you to stop losing weight. I can see if you were in mid onederland or something but 300 lbs. Yeah it's bizarre that they'd say that. Plain and simple they are full of it and just want to keep you from succeeding either that or they're being phony. I'm relatively new to the weight loss surgery game but I think life has a messed up way of trying to bring you down when you're winning and people can be down right evil. Just ignore them or make them feel stupid if it annoys you that much but you keep going toward your goal and don't let anyone's bs hold you back. Do not listen to them I don't think they have good intentions. I think they're just trying to throw wrenches in your plan.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
