Protein intake?!?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was April 7th, I just came home yesterday and I am having a problem getting as much Protein or liquids that they recommend. I have awful pains that feel like my stomach is trying to growl and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

I had lapband in 2010 and had it removed in February 2016. I remember having a hard time with Protein just because I don't like it but can't remember if it felt the same.

At this point you should be on only Clear Liquids. Your Protein requirements shouldn't be worried about until you are on the full liquid phase where you can drink Protein shakes.

Not everyone is sent home on clear liquids. I wasn't.

Getting up and walking helps better with gas pains than anything. As far as getting in enough Protein and fluids, keep at it. It may take a few days to where you're hitting your targets, but it should get better each day.

And remember that in the early days, you can end up in the hospital again if you don't get in your fluids, but you won't be for too little Protein. Your Protein drinks count as Fluid, too.

That isn't everyone's instructions.

I was explicitly allowed Premier Protein during my clear phase. Getting in my protein and fluids were both my surgeon's priorities.

To the OP, just keep sipping and working at it. It will get easier.

Are you taking a PPI?

What is PPI? My dr told me to focus on getting any kind of Fluid in for the first few days to avoid dehydration.. The protein I just can't stomach because it is disgusting. Just can't wait to be on baby like food lol

Protein shakes are part of my clear liquid stage too. Said I'd be drinking them in the hospital. I think it's important to have someone with you when getting instructions too - it's all so hard to remember and then you think - did they say I could have that or did I read it somewhere else. Protein is important immediately. I bought a few protein waters to try. I also found some chicken stock that has a fair amount of protein. I love chicken broth now - I hope I still do after surgery.

A PPI is an acid blocker (like Prilosec). I was prescribed on for several months post-op.

A PPI (proton pump inhibitor) is a medication (Prilosec is one brand) that can help decrease the acid in your stomach so you don't get heartburn, a common problem with the sleeve.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
