Should I give away all of my clothes that are too big?

Recommended Posts

I am officially down 50 pounds and out of my size 20s and 2x clothes. I really want to give them away and try to sell the good stuff on consignment - but should I? Is this weight loss really for life? I feel like I'm in a dream I don't want to wake up from!

It really is for life.

I recommend keeping one "before" item so you have something tangible to show as a reminder of where you came from and get rid of the rest.

Like @@Inner Surfer Girl said, I kept one pair of pants and one shirt from my highest weight, just as a reminder of where the journey started. But everything else had to go! I know some people keep their old wardrobe, or get some things altered to fit their changing sizes, but it was pretty therapeutic for me to get rid of those things. Now between clothing exchanges and thrift/consignment shops, I've gotten a whole "new" wardrobe and it hasn't cost me more than $100.

Get rid of it! I have already started that too. The only reason to keep it would be because you don't plan on succeeding and after having 80 percent of my stomach removed for 20K, I intend to win this fight.

Yep .. I'm with the other posters ... say good bye to the clothes that no longer and WILL NEVER fit again!

In my opinion ... keeping the clothes is a license to allow yourself to get back to where you started ...

Because ... Hey! You've got clothes that will fit!

So I was only toooooo happy to say good bye to the ugly fat clothes that kept me covered for YEARS !!

Now, I wear clothes that FIT me ... shape me ... and help me become the curvy woman I was meant to be :)

Definitely get that stuff out of your house! You don't need a safety net to fall back on. Plus you are going to need the space for all your smaller, more stylish clothes!

Yes! What everyone else said. Get rid of it all except for the one "fat suit" that will help you (later) remember how far you have come and inspire you to stay healthy.

I've lost 100 pounds and now weigh 135. This is the first time in my life I've burned my bridges behind me (given away all my fat clothes). It was so emotionally freeing that it's hard to describe. You just have to do it to feel it.

Should I give away clothes that are too big?

@@iwillbeachitagain

yes!!!

if you hold on to your bigger clothes, you'll have a "safety net"

if you start to fall (gain weight)

there is always something you could wear!

NOT the way to think about things

I DO suggest YOU keep one big article of clothing

about one year after goal

i went to Kohl's, the place i always shop

a magnet had been placed in my body years ago

it drew my body to all PLUS SIZE clothing

my hand took me to "those" elastic stretched 2X blue jeans

i took the pair to the changing room

put in on over my size 6 jeans

i stared at myself, tearing STRONGLY

this is a good/bad memory i won't forget

after a few minutes i bought the jeans

they sit in the back of my closet

you have lost 50 lbs!!!??

keep up the good work

you are aces

congrats

kathy

I would sell all my clothes and use all the money made to buy new pretty small clothes!

What a wonderful feeling it is to have to throw away an entire wardrobe because everything is too big!!!!! Congratulations on your weight loss

I donated everything to Goodwill once I got 2 sizes too small to fit. I'll take the tax right off and use it to find my new skinny wardrobe!

I'm going to donate it all to the poor/church. I'm not religious at all but there are homeless people who need clothes, especially in nyc. They can have it- I am going to buy myself a whole new wardrobe! But I will wait until I reach the 50 pound mark.

It feels so good to clear out the closet, bag all but one outfit up, haul it over to the Salvation Army, and then go to an upscale consignment shop and buy something new for yourself. I've done this three times since my surgery.

Resist the impulse to buy a lot of new clothes. They won't fit for long and you'll just have to repeat the process.

I cinched the waist of my size 20 clothes as long as I could before shopping for size 14's. Then I dropped to size 12. Now I'm size 10. Like I said, just buy what you need when you're in transition.

I would just keep one shirt and one pants in your heaviest size so your can compare them, That's what I am doing!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
