1 year post op - hunger

Recommended Posts

My doctor warned me about this and it has happened. This is scary to me because I feel like I might gain the weight that I have lost. I don't eat NEARLY as much as I did prior to surgery I guess I'm in my feelings.

If you're getting in good, dense Protein sources (chicken, fish, turkey, etc) as your main meal portion and eating veggies and small amounts of complex carbs each meal, then it's probably not real hunger. It's going to be head hunger. Which is something you'll have to try to get under control if you hadn't been working on it with a therapist or support group before now (relearning how to eat and also figuring out your emotional/psychological attachments to food and breaking those habits).

If you're eating simple carbs often now (breads, pastas, rice, potatoes, sugary things) that may be the issue. Simple carbs increase hunger cravings and make you crave more carbs as well. It can be a pretty depressing cycle. But you can detox from carbs by doing a 5 day pouch reset (basically go back to doing liquids/protein drinks for a few days, then soft foods, then the basic protein/veggie progression WLS patients stick to in the early days after surgery).

I will try that! Thank you

You also may be hungry because you need to eat more. Do you measure your food? How many calories are you getting?

I get between 1200- 1500 a day.

That's a decent range depending on how active you are. I'm really active so I feel like I'm always hungry which is why I've slowly been increasing my calories every week. How often do you eat?

I eat every 2 to 3 hours and I sip all day. Breakfast is usually greek yogurt with Bear Naked for Protein. lunch, egg salad (2 boiled eggs mixed with greek yogurt and paprika). snack, Sargento cheese Stick and 2 slices of Oscar Mayer Natural turkey breast. dinner is egg-drop Soup with noodles. *I probably shouldnt have the noodles, but... *

Maybe you're looking for variety in your meals. Try adding in, fruit veggies and nuts.

Variety is a good idea. If you're pretty active you could try adding a bit more calories in the form of dense Protein? Soups have never been particularly filling for me, but maybe it's different for you? 1200 - 1500 calories seem like a wide range. Do you find you're hungrier on 1200 days?

No about the same. I have been keeping a journal and I am bored. I need to find something to do in the evening.

@@dohickey01 if the hunger isn't any different with a 300 calorie difference than it probably is head hunger.

I am 1 Year out on the 29th of April. You have to keep to the program. Measure everything Protein first. Eat the correct portions to get back on track. Remember surgery is not the miracle, it is a start. You must stick to the plan.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
