Limbo-time before surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have finally been given a date for my surgery of 24th October!! :whoo:but ever since I decided to go ahead with surgery I have been in a strange 'eating limbo' where I have alternated from going on fad diets to binging and eating anything I can lay my hands on.

Has anybody else experienced this?

It is like I don't know what to do with myself while I am waiting for the surgery! Part of me thinks I should be really good and try to lose as much as I can before I have to go on the pre-op diet but the other half of me (the naughty half!) is saying 'go on, eat what you want now, the surgery will sort you out!'

I hope I get my head straight before October

Hi Bandwagon,

I totally agree with you. Sometimes, I wake up and think, and I'll start the day with a couple of cherry bakewells then munch through crisps etc.. (you gather my gist) then othr times I think the more I give up now the better advantage I will give myself in the long run. I am to be banded in Belgium on the 10th September and can't wait, but need to stick to giving myself the best advantage. Ive seen all this talk about pre-op dieting but can't quite work out which is best.

I think we need to just step away from the cake!

Totally agree,

I have been on a pre-op protien diet for about a month and have been struggling. I go to meet the surgeon tomorrow and am down cuz I didn't lose the amount of weight that I wanted to lose. (Darn those delicious snacks) :) At least I still work out, thats my only saving grace.

So I've come to the conclusion that it's so not worth it, the cheating I mean but I just have to get the willpower to overcome it.

Good luck

Let me just say that if I had to wait two months for surgery, I would have probably gained about 30lbs! Once I had my consultation and the surgery was scheduled, I had 4 weeks until I had to start the preop diet so in my head I was thinking, "might as well eat now, I won't be able to for 6 weeks" so I ate anything/everything and gained 10lbs! The good thing was I lost 9 of it during my 2 week preop diet, the surgery went great and I am down another 3lbs since Friday. I think a lot of us go on pre surgery binges but look at it logically, if we didn't have issues with food to begin with, we wouldn't need the band. Just try to keep in mind the more you put on the more you have to take off. On the other hand, I had pretty much had all my favorites and while the preop diet was HARD, the postop had been fairly easy. Best of luck!

I think I just need to get myself under control..after all, if I can't do it now, how am I going to cope after surgery?!

The thought of trying to binge and causing band slippage will hopefully be enough to deter me after the operation....:nervous

Thanks for replying!

I agree the thought of slippage deters/worries me too so I will have to come to the same conclusion. : )

Oh I am on the same page as you. My surgery date is 08/31. Every morning I tell myself today is the day I will be good and work on my required 10 lb WL prior to surgery. This morning I really felt gung ho. I get to work and it's like being in a black out. The next thing I know I have eaten 3 Cookies and a piece of choc cake w/ a coffee. Thanks very much to my work for the gunk donation. I can't believe it. What is wrong with me? It's like I have ZERO control!!! I'm so afraid I will show up for surgery and they are going to send me back home. Good luck to you!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
