Mortification in the gym...

Recommended Posts

So, today I started with a personal trainer at a local gym. And after going over my numbers and all that jazz, we began to warm-up. He wanted to do 45 seconds of jumping jacks. I have not done jumping jacks in over 2 decades. So, I began and I ended up urinating. It was so mortifying--I told the young man, that I had just started my cycle and needed to leave, the truth was I urinated all over myself. Damn it. So my question: Incontinence: What do you use in order to prevent that from happening when doing high impact exercise? I spoke with my surgeon who said it could be obesity related, but also from having a vaginal birth--it happens. I've never bought any pads or incontinence underwear--so I am looking for other's experiences in this department.

Thanks,

Leilie

This is not at all abnormal and not something related to your weight. I have a friend that I used to take boxing classes with, who after having had a child, could not do jumping jacks without incontinence. She's in great shape, weighs around 135 pounds and would have had the same problem that you did. I would test out what kinds of impact you can handle at home and then just let your trainer know what you will and will not be doing. My friend only had the issue doing jumping jacks or jumping rope..she was fine running and doing most other impact exercises, just not jumping that jostled the bladder. You can always wear incontinence underwear or you can just not do some things that might cause the problem. I don't do exercises that involve spinning because it makes me sick...might people call me a wimp? Sure. Do I care? Nope. We are adults and if we don't want to do a certain kind of anything, then we don't do it.

I totally agree with AvaFern's answer above.

I was having issues like that before my hysterectomy. My uterus was enlarged and pressed on my bladder. They sell pads that are very effective for such issues.

I had/have the same problem since having a kid and use descreet pads. Really just a regular pad that blocks odors. I can say that, since losing 70 pounds, it has gotten considerably better. Good luck with your exercise--that's great that you're getting out there!

You could try poise pads or impressa. It has odor control vs regular menstrual pads. The impressa intrigues me. It looks like a tampon but it's specifically for incontinence. Don't beat yourself up. You will be fine

Agree with con con, don't beat yourself up! It happens to so many of us. My doctor said mine is weight related and I have seen some improvement since VSG. Give the weight loss a chance and see if it improves. My BFF is skinny has the same issue way worse than I do from vaginal birth. Women 19 to 99, obese and skinny are in this one together. The good news is if you get to goal and are still having issues there are medical interventions that can help! In the meantime.... Hello Poise.

Incontinence can and probably is, at least in part, associated with being overweight.

That been said, Teena, and Poise make incontinence pads in all lengths and thicknesses. Both products work well.

I wouldn't be willing to admit that I couldn't do any exercise because I "leak". :)

Wear a pad and get jumping, Jack!!!!

The same thing happened to me last year when I began a new workout that involved jumping a lot. I was caught off guard to say the least. I found that if I don't drink for an hour or so before I workout and pee just before I start the workout I am fine. If I don't do that, I will end up wetting myself. Trial and error. Glad I didn't give up! Keep with it and find something that works!

My GYN/urologist suggested wearing a tampon (OB super) when I work out. Puts pressure on your urethra and can help with exercise incontinence. Just remember ofcourse to remove when your done.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
