Week 1 - Am I drinking too much too fast?

Recommended Posts

Hi Friends-I'm 5 days post op and a little concerned that I am drinking too fast. I think I am ok with Protein Shakes. It takes me about 1 hour to finish one 11oz bottle (pure or premier).

But when it comes to warm liquids I can get them down pretty quickly. Looking back at my food journal I have been having 16oz of broth for lunch (30-60min). And tonight I just sipped away 16oz of tea in 20 minutes. Is this too much Fluid at once? Am I stretching my sleeve? Sipping has gotten easier each day and today was the first day I didn't have spasms while sipping so I just kept going. Any ideas/advice would be great!!!

I'm 2 weeks out and I have noticed I've been drinking more in a shorter time as the days go on. Also, I noticed I can drink the broth faster (maybe because it's hot). I was told to get at least 64 oz in, and I think that's important. I don't think the the sleeve will stretch from liquids, but I'm a newbie too. If it makes you uncomfortable , just try and slow down a bit. I do, when I see I'm going to fast.

i am 11 days out and i have been able to drink Clear Liquids (esp warm) and my Protein fairly fast too. i just listen to my body. i can feel if i need to take a break. i have heard that liquids really cant stretch your sleeve by themselves unless maybe you chugged a bottle of Water which wouldnt be physically possible. i feel we are lucky that we can get our fluids and protein down as some people have issues at the beginning and even have to go back on IV s. i feel the warm tea and broth is soothing. i just practice putting the mug down for little bits cause i know that s what we have to do with eating real food. its like a whole new way of eating. putting down your fork, etc. i am nervous but up for the challenge.

No. I didn't even read your whole post, but I can say "no" with 100% confidence. It is not possible to drink too much or too fast. liquid passes straight through your sleeve in a matter of seconds. It will not "stretch" your sleeve or hurt you in any way.

The only dangers from drinking are drinking WHILE eating or drinking immediately after eating. If you aren't feeling any restriction with liquids in the days immediately post-op, you should count your blessings! It just means you have less swelling than us unlucky ones who struggle to get our fluids in those first few days.

I am on 14 post op . Right from the first day I never even felt like I had surgery. I have had no pain I have slight bruising around my incisions. I have had no problem drinking my Protein Shakes or getting all my Water in . I am getting scared that I do not feel any restriction but from what I read that is normal with just liquids . I am just worried that this surgery is not going to work and I am going to fail at this . I have only lost 1 pound in a week .

I am 3 weeks post op and I can only take in an ounce or two. I get full quick. So I drink my fluids in 2oz at a time. I'm literally drinking all day but I'm getting my 64 oz in! I'm having trouble with the puréed foods. I bought baby food, since I don't always have time to cool and purée regular foods. I spice them up a bit but no hot stuff. I tolerate that okay but I'm already tired of eating it. I did well drinking my Protein shakes but now that I'm on purée, I'm finding it very hard to get my 60 gms of Protein in a day. I just cannot take in more than 1-2 ounces at a time. I get that "lump in your throat" feeling. Anyone have any suggestions?

I could drink more at a time after a week because the swelling is going down. :-) You're right on track I'd say.

I promise you that once you are onto more solid foods, you WILL feel restriction. You aren't supposed to have restriction with liquids. I wish more surgeons would do a barium swallow test and let their patients watch it live. Mine did one and it was plain to see that the liquid passed through my sleeve immediately. It didn't sit in my sleeve for even a second. The "restriction" that some people feel post op is all due to swelling or, in rare cases, stricture.

So while on full liquid phases is it necessary to wait with drinking Water if I have something like Soup

It's probably still a good idea to get into the habit of waiting to drink after eating, but if you are atruggling to meet your water goals, it might be better to use that time to get in more fluids. The real reasons you aren't supposed to drink after eating are that it can make you overfull and can flush food out of your stomach too quickly. Neither of those are issues when what you are "eating" is actually liquid.

I don't wait...I drink it all when I can, otherwise it's too hard to get my fluids in for the day.

How long is it necessary to sip?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
