9/2/15 - Can't Eat Enough

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery September 2, 2016. I have lost exactly 80 pounds in 6 months. I am struggling with eating enough actual food to keep my nutrition levels acceptable. I absolutely hate the high-Protein shakes, but I will have one every few days as a last resort.

A lot of my hair has fallen out, so I cut it short.

Anyone else in the same boat? Any suggestions for me?

Sher :)

There are lots of other sources of Protein besides shakes. You are certainly far enough out now that you can have Protein Bars. Just be careful to check all the nutritional info and make sure they are low in sugar, saturated fat, and net carbs.

You can also eat lots of high Protein foods: meat, dairy, nuts, legumes....

What sorts of things ARE you eating and are you having any issues with any specific foods?

To me it is as easy to eat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt as to drink a Protein shake.

I agree. What are you eating?

Do you plan your meals and Snacks?

Are you tracking your food?

What is your Protein target?

By the way, congratulations on the weight loss. You look great!

I eat scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, chicken, Soups, seafood, fish, fruit...

As soon as that first bite of whatever hits my stomach, I don't want to eat any more. It's very uncomfortable passing through my stomach opening. I do plan my meals and try to eat well. It's just not happening.

Thanks for the compliments. I do enjoy being thinner. My day to day eating issues are a struggle, though.

I am only 5 week post op but I completely understand what you are saying. I too take 4 or 5 bites which is maybe 1 1/2 to 2 oz and I am in pain. That pain lasts any where form 2 to 3 hours and in not very pleasant. I was hoping that this pain would stop before too much longer. Now I am concerned as you say your 6 months out and still have it. By the way you look fantastic and 80 pounds down is fantastic.

Have you tried any of the Protein Soups or hot chocolates they may not taste to you as bad as the shakes taste?

Your discomfort does not sound normal at 5 months out. Have you talked to your surgeon? Perhaps an upper GI study or even scope is warranted to see what's going on in there.

Just curious.... How big of bites are you taking? And are you chewing till it's mush?

That was the hardest thing for me, slow down, chew completely and smaller bites. I haven't had that pain as long as I remember to do those things.

I do chew thoroughly and take small bites. This is why I'm freaked out.

I had never heard of stricture, but I will be asking my dr about it tomorrow.

I do feel as though something is wrong.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
