Post-Op Day 5 Lots of Pain

Recommended Posts

I had my RNY on 2/17 and have had severe pain around my incision sites. Particularly the open wound from where my drain was. I'm really trying not to be a downer about this, but it's really difficult when my husband who had GS on the same day is doing so much better.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I'm also having a horrible time getting the Protein Shakes down. I can do Water and broth no problem but the shakes seem to sit in my throat.

I know that I need to take things slowly and body is having a massive adjustment, but it's really hard not to compare myself to my husband or what others are doing who had their surgery around the same time.

It is always hard right after surgery. Your body is in a major heal mode. So don't be too stressed about meeting the Fluid and Protein daily requirements. Just keep trying and eventually you should be able to get there. I didn't have a port so I can't compare to your pain levels. I stayed off the pain medicine once I left the recovery room. And my pain levels never went above a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. I found that walking, walking, walking minimize the pain and made the recovery process much smoother and quicker.

I'm sorry you're in so much pain, and I can assure you it's only going to get better, probably much better, and soon. And comparing yourself to others is only ever going to make you miserable. I've been having to learn this lesson as well. No one else has your body, your history, your hormones, etc. Just keep taking care of yourself and give yourself as much time and tlc as you need to heal. You'll get there. :)

I wasn't able to drink Protein shake for about two weeks post op. It made me feel super nauseous.

Try not to compare yourself to anyone, especially your husband who had a different surgery than you! You had your stomach cut AND your intestines rerouted.

I'm 5 days post op and finally feeling some relief! Last night was the first night I skipped the rx pain meds and did ok with just regular Tylenol. My drain incision hurts still too and all incisions are itchy, itchy!! But getting better day by day, & hope you will too :)

I had RNY 12/22/15 and the general census is that the pain lasts about 3 weeks, especially at the largest site. Some people don't tolerate shakes well that is why my dietician recommends powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder. It is clear, unflavored and can be added to anything. Just a thought.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
