Surgery on 02/15 - How is everyone doing?

Recommended Posts

Surgery went great. Felt wonderful that first night. I even thought to myself, "Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who have no problems at all!" Then morning hit. And the nausea.

I dry-heaved so much that I wound up pinching a nerve in my shoulder. Don't ask me how that's possible, but that's what happened. Then they had a problem with my drain--blood, blood everywhere--and the doctor decided I should stay an extra day. Tuesday was not pleasant, let me tell you.

Then woke up today and felt fine again. The night nurse figured out that I probably had a clot blocking the drain and when that passed, all the blood came. She sensibly reset the dressing (day staff just kept taping over it). She also suggested a hot pad for the shoulder, which worked a treat. So I'm home and fine and just sip-sip-sipping away.

How is everyone else doing this fine Wednesday?

So sorry to hear the second day was not a good one for you. Right after my surgery I was put on anti blood clotting medicine and have to take it for 30 days. I am surprised you didn't get any such meds. If I may ask what kind of surgery did you have that you needed a drain? Wow you dry heaved a lot to do that to your shoulder. Glad to hear the heating pad helped. I only had one episode of that. Glad to hear you are doing better and home. Get plenty of rest and let your body heal but don't forget to walk it will help with the gas. If your allowed get your Protein Soups and shakes in as ASAP. Once I get mine down 3 days after surgery I was feeling much better.

As for me since you asked. I am heading into my 4th week post op and am feeling great. I was given permission to start riding my bike again and will probably start tomorrow. I am finally done with the 1 egg a day phase and started with the next phase, cottage cheese re-fried Beans, turkey etc for the next 2 weeks. Everything I eat is staying down. However now that I have been given real food I am stalled with the weight loss. I am happy with the 20 pounds I have lost so far since surgery. I just need to embrace the stall, stay with the program and I know the weight will start to drop again.

Keep us posted as to how your doing.

I had a revision from the band to the sleeve on 2/15. Not sure what my weight is now. I am going to try things different this time with the scale. I want to weigh monthly on the 15th. With the band, I weighed morning and night and it was hard on my self esteem when the scale didn't move or moved in the wrong direction. I'm going to put my focus on eating healthy and getting exercise in. Let's hope I can stick to this method.

I intended to have a band to sleeve conversion on Feb 26 and woke up to my surgeon explaining that I had 2 hernias and thick scar tissue around the band. He fixed the hernias and cleaned up the scar tissue and I have to wait 3 months before I can have the sleeve done. This has been a hard recovery. I ended up getting hives due to the antibiotic they used during the procedure and I haven't been really able to go to the bathroom. I am now on prednisone trying to recover from the extreme hives and I'm praying I don't gain weight. I am strongly thinking about phentermine until then. I am not sure how I can go through this all over again but this time not being able to really eat or feel like drinking in recovery... I'm just nervous and extremely frustrated but grateful that the surgeon didn't proceed because I would have had a ton of complications possibly but now back to counting down the months/ days..

Oh, no, @@skinny06! It must be tough to have your body reacting to the medications on top of the knowledge that you need to wait even longer. But hang in there! It's been awhile since I had my hiatal repair, but I don't remember the pain lasting too long. Hopefully you'll be back on your feet in no time. On the bright side, this gives you a chance to lose even more pre-surgery if that's what you want. You'll soon be joining everyone on the Losers' Bench.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I found that the lap band removal is actually a difficult healing process. I pray getting the sleeve is much less difficult and I bounce back quickly. It's been alittle over a week and I still don't feel 100%.

Hello, I had my sleeve on 2/1/16... Had a similar problem after going home the evening of day three.. Dry heaving for hours , I was readmitted for dehydration and reduce the swelling due to surgery and hernia repair. All went well, released two days after. My weight loss was great until week five. I am starting week seven and am at a plateau.. I noticed since increasing food intake it is slower...The scale did move down two pounds for a day but now back up . I read it is common and will eventually move along. Does anyone have a similar situation? I wish I knew how long before the scale moves again. Due to severe back issues, my exercise is also limited. Maybe I will go back to shakes..

Sorry to hear you had dry heaves and had to be readmitted. I had a hernia repair, and a gallbladder removed in addition to the sleeve. My surgeon gave me a patch to put behind my ear the night before surgery and I was fine.

As for the scale not moving I too am experiencing that as well. I lost 19 pounds the first 10 days. Lost nothing for 2 weeks. I lost 8 pounds over the next 3 weeks and now I am at a 2 week stall again. Yes it slowed down once I got to eat food also. Even though all I ate was an egg a day during that third week I didn't lose a pound. Tuesday will be 8 weeks and total lost since surgery day is 27 which turns out to be an average of 3. 37 pounds a week. My exercise is riding a trike 5 out of 7 days due to my disability. How many grams of Protein are you eating in food a day? If your not getting 60 to 80 grams of Protein then a shake a day would be good. I still have 1 protein hot chocolate in the morning and it helps to get me to the 60 grams of protein. Keep going strong. I hear things will pick up once we are truly healed as we both are still healing.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
