How long were you on pain medicine for at home?

Recommended Posts

I am 7 days post op and still in a lot of pain at the site of my largest incision and my upper back. I was in the hospital 3 nights afterward because I have a very low tolerance for pain and a morphine IV wasn't touching my pain and dilaudid only lasted 2 hours on the pain. My surgeon prescribed liquid hydrocodone 4 times a day that I started taking day 3 when I got home from the hospital. I really don't like how it makes me feel so the past 2 days I've cut from every 6 hours to every 12. I have been lightly walking several times a day also to try and get rid of the pain if it is still gas related. Also, I'm running out of meds because it was a 5 day supply and going to call my surgeons office today about what to do.

I'm definitely feeling better and not in as much pain as I was but the pain is still too much to not take something. Please let me know how some of you were doing pain and meds wise at this point.

I only took three doses once I came home (about 24 hours after surgery).

Can you try liquid Tylenol?

1 week, although I didn't take it every 4 hrs as directed. I took it as needed.

I still have some left over.

I came home from hospital after three days because they found out I was allergic to Morphine in the hospital and it made me sick for the first two days. I took only one pill after I came home and that was to sleep in afternoon after one of my daycare kiddos hit me in my belly on accident.

So sorry you are having to go through so much pain. But to answer your question, I never needed any narcotic pain meds after surgery, even in the hospital. The only thing I was sent home with was a sublingual NSAID for the surgical inflammation.

I didn't come home on anything but Pepcid....stopped taking pain meds while in the hospital, I didn't like how they made me feel. Maybe some Tylenol, but nothing prescribed.

I was in a lot of pain but whatever they gave me in the hospital did nothing for me. I developed horrible back pain from laying there that it was hard to get up and walk. I was released the next day and never took anything. My first week was pretty bad pain wise and the second week was a bit better. I had band removal and the spot where my port sat for 14 years was horrible. They had to dig that puppy up and it was one of the original huge ports.

I started feeling better the second week and while I still had pain it was much more manageable.

Two days......my largest incision only bothered me if I was careless about how I got up from the bed or chair, for about a month. I did not take anything for that since it was momentary from time to time.

Only took pain meds for 3 days after surgery. Tapered off over those 3 days and done. The more you move the better, just take it slow and easy when getting up and down.

My surgeon also prescribed liquid hydrocodone when I left the hospital.

I took it only twice. It made me feel very weird, and I hated it.

My stomach didn't really hurt -- my pain was from the gas they blow you up with. And I knew what would help that (walking) and what would not help (pain meds).

My doctor sent me home with a liquid hydrocodone but it made me really itchy so I stopped taking it after day two. I tried some liquid tylenol but it was so sweet that it made me gag so I didn't have any pain medicine whatsoever after the second day.

Even though I had the narcotic pain prescription filled. I didn't take it at home because it makes me pass out. I only took a few doses of Tylenol for 1-2 days and then quit everything. I am 11 days post op.

I had to take the liquid hydrocodone every day for 2 weeks (but only at night after the first week) and occasionally for over a month after surgery. My largest incision was incredibly sore- I could manage during the day when I could be careful about how I moved, but at night when I would shift in my sleep it was unbearable.

I was on pain news for 5 of the 7 days in hospital, but didn't go home with any. However, my big incision site does still bother me (soreness mainly) but not enough for painkillers, it's just annoying.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
