I am three weeks out from RNY and I have only lost 11 pounds. I thought the weight would be coming off quickly so early on. I am following the rules and getting in enough Protein and Water. I'm walking 30 minutes a day. I am so discouraged. The 11 lbs came off in the first two weeks. This last week I have lost nothing. :(

For the first few weeks your body is in a major heal mode and it takes a little time for things to kick off. During the hospital it is common to gain some weight because they fill your body with fluids and it takes a little time to loose this new weight. It is also common to hit stalls.

The three most important elements after RNY surgery it to meet the daily requirements for fluids, Vitamins and Protein. Also walk for 30 minutes per day. So be a little patient, follow the requirements and let the magic happen.

Thank you for the encouraging words James. I will just keep on doing everything I should be doing and hope I see some progress soon.

Don't sweat it! My first month, I had only lost a total of 15lbs! I'm almost 3 months out now and have lost quite a bit more like near closing in on 70lbs!

I lost VERY slowly in the beginning. Now I stall for weeks and suddenly lose like 10-15 pounds in the span of a few days. PCOS is a monster that can never be killed, only subdued. However, even losing slowly and having all these stalls, I'm still 101 pounds down in 5.5 months. It will all even out for you in the end, just stick to your plan, take good care of yourself, and be patient with your body. It's a little traumatized right now, but it will get better. :)

I would just like to say congratulations! Losing 11 lbs in 3 weeks is actually excellent. You have to remember that this is not a race and the reality is you want it to come off slower. It's easier on your body and skin.

6 months down the road you will wish you could lose 11lbs in 3 weeks. The reality is after those first 2 to 3 months it does slow down. If you lose 5 to 10lbs per month that is great.

And there will be stalls along the way. Stick to the plan and you will continue to do fantastic. I promise!

I lost 17 pounds in the the first week and then NOTHING for 2 weeks. I was very discouraged but at my 6 week check up I was down 30 pounds. Just be patient.

I am about 10 weeks out now and have lost nearly 50 pounds. I lost a bunch the first two weeks and then stayed exactly the same for about a week then lost a total of 20 for the month. I did the same in month 2 lost for 3 of the weeks but stayed the same for one in the middle. Week 9 I lost about 5 pounds then last week the scale didn't move at all. Then Sunday morning I lost 1.6 pounds over night and today another 1.7 overnight. I am now 1.3 pounds from my twenty pounds a month average! Its coming off in fits and starts, but at least that means it is giving my skin some amount of time to shrink too. At least that is what I keep telling myself! :)

Congrats on your loss. Keep up the hard work. It will show. Also, get out the tape measure! I have found that those no loss times are when my body shrinks. It helps to look at more than just the scale numbers.

Thanks for all the responses! I will try to be patient and not focus too much on the scale.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
