Liquid diet--feeling faint?

Recommended Posts

I am one day into my preop liquid diet. I am supposed to have less than 50g of carbs and 60-80g Protein.

I have had a Protein Shake for Breakfast, light and fit Greek yogurt for lunch, broth, sugar free Jello, more Greek yogurt. Anyone else feel faint from it? I'm a 1st grade teacher and thinking I'm going to have to take the rest of the week until surgery off.

The first few days are rough. It's just so few calories. I remember calculating it and it was only a max of 450 calories a day for me, which is really not enough to function on. Also, As your body enters ketosis, you will just feel like crap. Headaches, thirst, bad breath. It's no fun at all. Just have to hang in there. Hopefully you won't have to take time off work, since you will have to be missing work post-op, but you might need to nap as soon as you get home from work. Also, be sure to stand up slowly and take a moment to brace yourself before walking.

It's completely normal. You will feel bad for the first 3-4 days and then you will feel normal again. You may also have headaches and be irritable as well during that time.

You're not alone. I felt very hungry and very faint the first few days of the liquid diet. I wasn't sure I could do it! But I did, and it definitely got easier as the days went on. Take it easy if you can (taking some time off might be a good idea, if you can spare it, but if not, try to rest at home as much as you can). You can do this!

Thanks guys! It has definitely gotten easier every day and surgery is in 2 days ????! This is way too tmi but did anyone have issues with the liquid diet when it came to using the restroom? I'm embarrassed to say that I've had to toss a few pairs of pajama bottoms this week due to a cough that was more than just a cough.

There's a reason people around here say "never trust a fart"! It can be a real issue in those early days!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
