I'm about to have sleeve surgery, but my surgeon wants me to have gastric bypass, as he is concerned that my mild reflux will get worse after the sleeve, I am currently taking nexium 20mg. Has anyone faced this problem before. Please advise, as I don't want to the bypass it looks daunting.

I have acid reflux. I am on Nexium 40 mg. I did not want to have bypass. My surgeon is fine with the sleeve. He said even if the GERD worsens it can be controlled with medication. One of my main reasons for having the surgery is to get off of all of this medication but I am willing to take the chance as opposed to having bypass. I will say, however, I do have a hiatial hernia that will be fixed during surgery and this may take away the need for the medication. The bypass scares me but its a personal choice.

Thanks for that looks like you have the same symptoms, he has offered me a test called a manometry PH TEST that apperantly indicates how severe my reflux is. So time will tell.

I've been on Nexium 40mg for probably 15 years. My reflux can get so bad Water can make me sick. I was sleeved 10/26/15. My reflux is better! While the vsg can increase reflux, weight loss can decrease it. So time will tell.

Wow that is good news thats what i think also that the extra weight doesen't help with reflux. Thank for the good news.

I had VSG 20 months ago. I had no reflux before surgery. Since surgery I have had horrible reflux. I'm currently on 40mg protonix in the morning, 60 mg dexilant before dinner and 150 mg Zantac before bed. I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the time of my surgery but have developed another one since. I'm set for a 24 hour esophageal pH monitoring test at the end of the month. I will tell you that reflux can get worse, but there are a bunch of people who never have a problem. I can't advise you one way or another. I can tell you that I told my surgeon that even with the problems I'm having I would trade my surgery for anything and would do it again if need be. Good luck with your surgery!

If bypass seems daunting, it's not for you. Everyone picks the surgery that seems right for them. I had sleeve 3 months ago and bypass always felt weird to me. Reflux is a small price to pay. I take Prilosec morning and night. Worth it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
