Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

for those who went to mexico...did you tell your primary Dr before you left?

People frown on going to Tijuana for surgery so much I thought once she could see I was healthy and losing weight it would go over better.

One would hope a doctor would be a little less likely to succumb to urban legends and anecdotal stories about surgery in Mexico than the average public. They are aware there are excellent surgeons and doctors all over the world.

I made my appointment today to go in and speak with him about my plans. I am strangely nervous. I feel like I am going to be judged even though I know he isn't that type of person.

How did your conversation with your pcp go? I brought up that I was thinking about WLS at my last appt. And my pcp said that "seemed very drastic" and then prescribed me a $700/mo injection medicine for diabetes that my insurance wouldn't cover (I'm not diabetic) that has the side effect of weight loss (which I didn't even fill the prescription).... so I am looking for a new doctor and trying to come up with a way and courage to bring up the wls again. So please post how your conversation goes and how you brought it up. Thank you and good luck! :)

In Canada, your primary care provider must refer you to the WLS program in your respective province. About a year ago, I asked mine for a referral, which he happily gave. Fast forward 11 months, and i'm still on the waiting list to 'start' the program!

In Dec 2015 mentioned to him that I was looking at other options for the WLS, since I was getting nowhere with the referral. I told him I was looking at the Mexico route, but I was worried because I had heard of some docs refusing to keep them as patients after if they went out of country for the surgery.

He said this would not be the case if I went to Mexico, and he said that there were more skilled surgeons available there than in my home town - as evidenced by the long waiting times, but said to make sure I did my homework/research in picking one. 3 weeks later, I went back and said i'd booked my surgery in MX for Jan 20, and he said okay, see you in 3 months for blood work, and bring him the surgery report and notes.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
