Sydney Sleevers in 2016

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone! I'm a nervous newbie who is just starting her journey into the world of bariatric surgery. I've had weight issues for years and resultant complications has just made me realise that this is probably my only option at this point. Is anyone else in the Sydney area undergoing their procedures this year? Would love to hear some stories and some advice, especially in regards to early release of super or getting it done through Medicare. Xx

Hey,

I'm from up in Brisbane, QLD. I actually just had my gastric sleeve surgery last week (20 Jan). When are you going in for surgery?

In terms of Medicare, they only contribute around $600 for anaesthetic costs (usually around $1000-$1200).

Hi I'm living in Perth and was sleeved last May. I don't remember the exact dollar amount but after medicare and health insurance it cost me about $5000. Probably saved that amount on my grocery bill by now! It has been an awesome journey and I am just about at goal. Never thought I'd be a size 12. Good luck!

Hi, I'm from Sydney Metro area and I am getting a sleeve done this year. I'm meeting with the surgeon in March to choose a surgery date. I don't have private health insurance. I thought early super release would be an option but found out you have to prove you can't pay for it any other way, which includes getting private health and waiting a year. So I'm paying for it all myself. Cost estimate is $22,000.

Hi,

I am from Sydney, had surgery 4 days ago, still in hospital.

All going better than expected, little pain, on full fluids, not hungry.

Going home tomorrow.

Private insurance covering hospital, out of pocket will be about $6K, most of the doctors fees as Medicare and fund pay very little.

$22K sounds very expensive Chaning.my.life

Would love to be in touch with local people going through the same thing.

Warm regards

Marivero

I started my Optimist pre-op yesterday. Seems to be going well. I made the baked asparagus and mushrooms from the book that I bought "Your complete guide to nutrition for Weight Loss Surgery" and it was absolutely delicious.

I am now eight days away from a new me (surgery 11th May 2016 at The Mater) and getting nervous and excited, not sure which one is more. Weighed yesterday and going to measure myself today.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
