Questions for those that went to Tijuana Mexico for GS

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I'm new to the forums. Have been reading a lot and am starting my process to get gastric sleeve surgery with Dr. Altamirano through Bariatric Pal.

Since everyone is such a help I wanted to ask a few questions to those who have had their surgery in Tijuana.

If you did it over would you do it there again?

Did you feel you got personal attention?

Did you ever feel unsafe?

Was there anything you would have liked to be different?

Is there anything that would help me to know ahead of time (any advice)?

Would I be better off in the house or hotel?

Thank you in advance for your insight!

I went for the band in 09 and I'm returning for the gastric sleeve. Wouldnt have it any other way.

In fact I was there today for an unfil of my band.

What I would like different? Be on a balcony overlooking the ocean for recovery. lol

I had my gastric sleeve one year ago in Tijuana. I felt well cared for. Would do it again. No complications. Only time I was scared was crossing a street because they all drive like maniacs lol. I am almost at goal weight. Started at 253 and currently 169. Goal is 160.

I've been to Tijuana twice for surgery. Once for plastics and once for my sleeve. Both times I received EXCELLENT care and attention. I wasn't afraid at all. Tijuana is pretty much just like being in the US. A McDonalds or Starbucks on every corner. There was a Walmart right near the Marriott where I stayed for my sleeve and my room in the clinic where I had my plastics had an excellent view of an Office Max. If you ARE afraid to go out on your own, you'll be shuttled everywhere you really need to go.

I would definitely not do anything different. I received amazing care from highly qualified surgeons. Much better than what I would have received in the US for even twice the price.

I've been once for gastric sleeve in 2013 and will be returning in March 2016 with dr Garcia for the gastric bypass. Great experience the first time and hoping it goes as smooth the second time.

I was sleeved in Tijuana last May. I stayed at the Grand Hotel. It was great. As others have pointed out, it's just like being in the U.S. There are so many fast food restaurants that it does make you chuckle. The only difference I noticed was that a Dominoes pizza restaurant had it's drivers ride bikes. Going to Tijuana for the sleeve is perfectly okay. You will be fine.

You have a sleeve and it looks only 2 years out. can you tell us why you are going with the bypass?

I have lost about 25lbs with the sleeve. It hasn't been as successful as I thought. My doctor said some people just need the malabsorption part of surgery. If only I had listened to his recommendation of the bypass from the beginning.

The recovery houses are no longer available, as they were flooded in the recent storms. Everyone now stays at a beautiful hotel, the two days there after surgery are included, and Dr. Altamirano will continue to visit you there.

I am staying at hotel Lucerna (sp?) and apparently that is absolutely lovely. 4.5 - 5 stars.

If you did it over would you do it there again?

Absolutely. I had a great experience...as good, if not better than any surgery here in the US. In fact, my US surgeon screwed up my gallbladder removal (left me with a hernia) and I really wish I'd gone back to my VSG surgeon in TJ instead of letting insurance pay for it here.

Did you feel you got personal attention?

Yes, only 5 patients in the clinic. Nurse checked in on me all night. The volume on my TV remote didn't work so she even adjusted the volume for me. Office manager made all of us chicken broth to sip on in the clinic the third day as we waited for our fluoroscopy and drain removals. Driver went out of his way to get us a medical fast pass across the border since my sister's flight was earlier than the usual departure times. I've gotten emails and phone calls from the followup Doctor, surgeon and nutritionist checking on my progress....they do this for 3 years postop. They have always been available for my questions.

Did you ever feel unsafe?

Never. Marriot staff was super friendly. Even the Walmart staff were helpful....gave us advice on how to hold and handle our money to not draw attention to ourselves. Walked to the Starbucks from our hotel twice a day. We were transported most everywhere by the OCC shuttle other then when we chose to go shopping on our own time. We were advised which cab companies would be safe to take.

Was there anything you would have liked to be different?

I was having such a good time with my sister I would have liked to stay longer.

Is there anything that would help me to know ahead of time (any advice)?

Read every thread you can on this and other WLS forums. It will prepare you for the good, bad and the ugly.

Would I be better off in the house or hotel?

The Marriot was perfect....helpful staff, onsite restaurant, free Popsicles and bottled Water, in room movie rentals, and a pool for my sister.

Hello, I went to Tijuana 1/12/13 and had my sleeve done at Santa Fe surgical center. I am 124 pounds down and maintain my weight loss. I have also had 2 rounds of plastic surgery in Tijuana. I do not speak Spanish and I went by myself. I have had 13 surgeries in the US and 3 in Tijuana and I can say that the care is amazing with every surgery I have had in Tijuana. The compassion of the nurses is untouchable. I never once felt like a number or never had the statement I will be back to help you (Usually when you here that it is a hour later you have to remind the nurse to come back) Not in Tijuana at any facility I have been in they take care of you right then. Let me answer your questions

If you did it over would you do it there again? YES, YES and YES

Did you feel you got personal attention? More than I ever did in the states.

Did you ever feel unsafe? I never felt scared or alone I felt completely safe.

Was there anything you would have liked to be different? I would have like to have put my fears aside and done it years earlier instead of waiting.

Is there anything that would help me to know ahead of time (any advice)? The only thing I can say here is your life will change but for the good.

Would I be better off in the house or hotel? Either or, no matter where you stay you will be taken care of like part of the family.

Can I ask if the plastic surgery was expensive there? After weight loss I need a Tummy Tuck that my insurance will not pay for.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
