Flying while sleeved!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am new to this forum and wondering if anyone flys a lot for work that has been sleeved? I am a flight attendant and fly 120 hours a month. My surgery date is Jan 14 2016 and I scheduled 3 weeks off following the surgery. I'm just looking for some advice on how your body feels after surgery while flying?

I fly a lot. I'm not sleeved yet, but I did ask the surgeon about travel after WLS. He didn't mention either the bypass or the sleeve but did discuss challenges for people who are banded. Apparently the band can tighten considerably at 30,000 ft requiring many to make trips to the ER immediately upon landing. This can be more complicated if you have landed in an unfamiliar, remote location with less than stellar health care.

That he didn't seem concerned about sleeve/bypass seemed good enough for me. Hope that helps a little!

I don't fly as often as you but I can tell you that I am just 2 weeks post op and feel 100% healed. I'm not flying for another 4 weeks but I have no concerns at this point.

Good luck on surgery day and best wishes for a fast recovery.

good topic. I too fly a lot and often to Asia. I asked my surgeon (have not had my surgery yet) and he said I could fly 10 days after. That's a bit too soon IMHO being the more experienced one.

I am hoping to fly once I get on pureed food. I believe not only the flying may be difficult, but being in China for two weeks on business, having to attend luncheons, etc. I figured I can survive by ordering Soup and maybe mushy fish, or just Soup and toss a tablespoon on GENEPRO in it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
