2weeks post op and not filling full ?

Recommended Posts

so I'm 2 weeks going on 3 weeks post op, and I'm not feeling full. I'm still on cream Soups and Jello and next week I started my soft foods. For example today for Breakfast I had 3 tablespoons of Greek yogurt and a Protein Shake, then for lunch I had jello and another Protein shake, and then went to Panera and had broccoli cheddar Soup in a bowl size to go and I ate the whole thing and was still kinda hungry. Is this normal , will this change once I start eating my soft foods ? I hope some one that's been through can give me some get advice cause I'm kinda worried

liquids go right through you. You will really notice a restriction when you get to solid foods. However, what bothers me is that you should not be hungry at this stage. So maybe you are only having "head hunger" and you may need to learn how to distinguish head hunger from real hunger.

Unless your stomach or esophagus are very swollen post-op (mine was) liquids pass right through your sleeve. Did you have a barium swallow test for leaks after surgery? If so, you would have seen that the barium passed through your sleeve in a matter of seconds. Liquids don't sit in your stomach long enough to make you feel full.

On top of that, the surgery itself can cause serious trauma to your nerves, making it impossible to get full signals to your brain.

Both of these reasons are why it is INCREDIBLY important to measure your food and eat on a schedule in the early weeks post-op. You CANNOT rely on your body to give you proper signals at all. Please, please, please, weigh and measure your food and make sure you are spacing your "meals" out properly.

I felt that way too. I definitely do get hungry (real hunger, not head hunger), despite people saying it's impossible. Once I switched to pureed food and was able to eat something with substance I finally felt satisfied. You'll get there!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
