Help! Weight gain after NUT!

Recommended Posts

I am a little bit nervous about the weight I gained after Thanksgiving holiday. I had my last weigh in on 11-19 and did not get approval until 12-11. I called the surgeons office and a rude receptionist told me that my surgeon was booked for the rest of the year. Well, I gained weight after my last real Thanksgiving and have not been able to get any of it off. My surgeon's office called me today to schedule my consultation for 12-17 and I am nervous about how the surgeon will feel about the weight gain. My insurance Anthem does not require weight loss for the surgery. I am freaking out! Should I really be worried about this since I have not yet started my pre op diet? Btw, my surgery is on 12-28.

At this point, having already gained the weight I would say there's no point freaking out. Do your best to lose, but it is what it is right?

Has your surgeon told you to stay at a particular weight?

I'm struck by your choice of words: "my last real Thanksgiving."

You don't have to believe me, but no. It's not.

It will be okay. Start your pre-op now. My dr prefers that I lose 5% of my body weight before surgery during the preop stage, but it's not required.

My surgery was scheduled for the 23rd, but yesterday it got moved to the 29th due to OR schedules.

Losing some weight is mainly to ensure that your liver shrinks up some for surgery.

Today's a new day, so start fresh! Good luck!

You should be fine. Your surgeon should be understanding as you are undergoing a radical change because you have an issue.

BTW....this was my first "real" thanksgiving. I had turkey, stuffing, and even a small piece of pumpkin pie. Because I didn't stuff myself full, 20 minutes later I was ready to play with the kids again.

VSG is not a death sentence. For me, the surgery forced my mind to adopt to a new normal, and the new normal is frickin wonderful!

So you got approved for surgery before meeting your surgeon? How does that work?

I went to a weight loss center called True Results that helped me fulfill my instance requirements in house instead of going through my pcp. I could not meet my surgeon until I was approved for surgery.

I'm sure that he has seen holiday weight gain before. That said, surgeons are quite variable as to what they expect or want of their patients pre-op. Some are really into pre-op diets and "proving you can do it" efforts while others are not. My doc takes the view that "if we could do it on our own, what do we need him for?" and doesn't go in for any pre-op dieting. YMMV Does your doc even require a pre-op diet, or are you going off of what others here online go through with different docs?

I was super nervous too because I gained 15 pounds from my last PCP appt. to approval but then lost 5 of it and went to pre-op today and my surgeon didn't even mention the 10 pound weight gain as a matter of fact he told me to enjoy Christmas and he would see me on the 28th. Anyways, bottom line, I fretted over the weight gain for no reason and my insurance didn't require weight loss either.

Man I wish I would have talked to you before I did this crazy dry fast that I thought would help me cur Water weight. Although it worked, I felt like it didn't matter. I had my surgery consultation and pre op class today and everything ran smoothly. My surgery date is also on the 28th and I couldn't be happier...best of luck

I'm curious, what is a dry fast? Also, we need to stay in touch so we can keep up with each others progress and for support since we are going to be sleeve sisters, lol!

Dear sleeve sister, a dry fast is when you do not eat or drink anything for a set period of time. Please don't ever do this...lol...I will definitely keep in touch...my support system is very small...lol

Don't worry, I won't, lol! My circle is small too. Only my husband and kids know and I just told my mom 2 days ago. I plan on coming out with it to anyone who asks (cause I'm sure folks are bound to ask when I start dropping the weight) but only when I have to. I just don't want any negativity right now ;)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
