So I'm a little over 3 weeks post op from gastric bypass and the scale says I lost 21 pounds however I really can't tell a difference when I look at myself. I can tell a difference in my pants in the fact that they are much looser but I really don't feel like I've lost 20 pounds. When could y'all tell a difference in your body when you looked at yourself?

Congrats on your weight loss! I'm always the last to see mine, and I think that's pretty common. I've been fat nearly all my life so it can mess with your head as far as body image. But you'll eventually reach a point where it's undeniable!

I am 2 weeks out from surgery and the scale is at a standstill for over a week. I'm walking over 2 miles a day every other morning. I don't understand as I am religiously following the plan.

I don't see the change in myself and I have lost 60 pounds in less than three months. The only way I notice the change is when I realize my clothes are way too big. Outside of that, looking in the mirror doesn't produce an image different from what I was used to seeing before surgery.

I'm pretty much where @@Ashlegal is, at three months and just over 60 pounds lost since surgery and almost 120 overall. I find myself wondering - am I not seeing myself clearly now or did I see myself as less big than I was then? Who knows? XD

Your brain really is the last to catch up. The thing that works for me is trying on old clothes. It cracks me up and I love the fact that I can literally fit in one side of my pants.

Just keep taking pics and looking at them side by side, your brain will catch up after a while.

Like @@Djmohr said, take pictures! I took a front, side, and back picture the night before surgery, and then I do the same photos every month. I still don't see it when I look in the mirror, but my first photos compared to my month 4 photos? It's very obvious!

Yep, I'm going to repeat the whole brain needs to catch up thing. 92 pounds down and I don't see the difference everyone else sees in me. I also do not feel as different as I expected,I'm still just as tired as ever. Perhaps because I was active before surgery and I still am, maybe because I'm older? Who knows? Anyway, because I can only see it in pictures and not in the mirror my therapist suggested looking at a side by side several times a day to give my brain the new information. I now have a before surgery/3 months post/current face pic as my screen saver..it's the only place I look several times a day. Hopefully no one else sees it and thinks I'm completely narcissistic.

lol @ narcissistic.

for me, my brain's doing the opposite...I've just recently realized just how big i was from looking at pictures. i always said that in a different life I'd probably have been an athlete, and i was strong and active up til the last 5 years...i finally felt fat because i could no longer keep up with my former self.

@@kayjay14 Sounds like you are doing well since you started this journey with our October buddies!!! I'm 6 weeks out & have lost 18 lbs since surgery. I too have a hard time seeing myself thinner, all though my pants are looser they aren't falling off like I want them too!!! I think its the same as seeing someone everyday you don't notice much change in them but when you haven't seen someone in awhile & they have changed you notice it right away! I think we get so anxious to be thinner we don't realize how far we really have come!! We will get there, & will have so much more confidence!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
