Who tried to talk you out of Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever tell you DO NOT go to Mexico? I just had a dietitian at a Bariatric Seminar freak out on me when I told her I was going to Mexico. I informed her that it was done through Bariatric Pal, and she looked at me as if I was crazy! She works for a Bariatric Center and didn't even know what this was. hmmmm She said I would be "butchered" in Mexico. I told her I had done my research and it is 100% legit and I am doing it.

So my question to all of you, is who has completely freaked out on your Mexico Decision?

Me. I freaked myself out to the point that I flew myself back home the same night and resolved to do better. Don't let this happen to you...you'll be okay.

Going to another country to have surgery IS very nerve-wracking, especially for those that haven't done their homework and research like you have. There are a lot of stereotypes involved with having surgery in another country. In some cases they might be true, but NOT in all cases.

You just have to trust in your research as well as your conversations with Dr. A, Ana, Natalie, and Alex. And don't forget about all of those positive video reviews where Mexico bariatric surgery patients have detailed their journey and raved about the experience.

I think when you tell anyone about going to Mexico for surgery everyone's normal reaction is to freak out. People that have never gone to Mexico have no idea how clean, safe and beautiful it is there. I have my surgery scheduled for the end of February and I'm not telling anyone because I don't think that anyone understands. I have researched this for over a year and I'm sure you have to. Good luck!

I am just standing my ground with people. Telling them that this IS happening. They can support me or keep their feelings to themselves. I have to do what's right for me.

Everyone I told was dead set against it and many people told me that I would die. One person even cried. However, I ignored them all because their opinions were uneducated. None of them had done any research on this and were just acting off of the b.s fear about what Mexico is like.

I didn't enter into this lightly. I took my time and researched everything extensively. As a result my stay in Mexico was wonderful. My surgeon was awesome. I had no real pain and zero complications. I would go back in a heart beat.

My dad was convinced I was going to die and he wouldn't get my body back lol. He pretty much avoided me until I actually left to gave surgery. He apologized after the fact when he realized that I was OK and didn't die or get a disease or anything weird. Lol

I only told my adult kids, outside of my husband of course. I told my mom because my Grandma is sick and I wanted someone to know I was going to be gone for a few days in case something happened. She was shocked at first, but my husband and I both assured her that I have fully done my research and I'm going to be okay.

I'll tell everyone else after the fact. Haha.

And by "In case something happened" I meant with my grandma. I'm not worried about anything happening to me.

Thanks for all the stories. Glad I am not the only one this has happened to. Just goes to show how people who know nothing about what you are doing is suddenly an "expert". If it didn't make me so mad it would almost be comical.

I am SCARED to death! I was fine until this afternoon when I decided to tell my best friend of over 20 yrs. She works in a hospital in Illinois and told me that there are so many horror stories about Mexico and she says she will have me talked out of it before my surgery is scheduled. I have been talking with Joyce myers with BeLiteWeight.com and she has had 3 family members go to the Star Medica hospital with Dr. Rodriguez and assures me that I will be fine ...I am reading horrible stories about Juarez Mexico and i am really nervous to where I'm ready to say nevermind. The patient facilitator tells me not to worry and my best friend said ..>"that's her job". I have googled for 3 days and I can't find anything bad on this dr yet. I really need to be reassured. I even read that someone tried to leave a hospital after a procedure and they refused to let her leave until she paid them more money. even though the dr's released her. I need to get over this fear..that's for sure

That's awful! I'm in Tijuana right now and it is honestly the best experience I've ever had! I went through bariatricpal and Dr. Altamirano did my surgery on Tuesday. I have 0 regrets. Everyone has treated me like family. I'm at their recovery house and just got back from dinner with one of the team. I had broth of course, but the thing is we sat and talked like old friends. I came alone but have never really been lonely this entire time.

There are FAR more success stories than there are horror stories. And you know what? There are just as many scary stories that happen in the states too. Some people have complications, it just happens. And yes, there are bad doctors as well. Do your research and talk to patients of the doc you choose, talk to the doctor, and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Just do your research. In the end you have to do this for you. Not anyone else. But I would advise to maybe message Alex about your surgeon. He knows a lot about the docs down there and can tell you if you are making the right decision with the doc you chose.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
