This diet seems like BS and I am pouting

Okay, so I'm only 5 days post-op and I'm at the point where my body is literally starting to eat itself...I am starving, NOTHING helps (and sometimes makes it worse), and I am cranky and mad at the world. Looking at the diet instructions my doctor's office gave me...I think some of this is total bull. No Pasta or bread for SIX MONTHS??? I haven't seen that anywhere else. I am frustrated because a friend of mine had the same surgery 2 months ago with another doctor and she's been allowed to experiment a whole lot more than this plan says I can. The thing is, they give this same sheet to all patients...meaning the bypass patients are given the same instructions as the sleeve patients. And that just makes no sense. My body is not bypassing the gall bladder and all that; I can process things better than a bypass patient. I got sleeve rather than bypass for a reason- it is supposed to be much easier to recover from and I can eat a lot more normal and still get all the results. The only thing really different is my stomach is tiny. Right? So why can't I try some things close to one month rather than 3-6??

I'm just complaining, really, but also wanted to know your experiences and thoughts. I see my surgeon tomorrow for my first post-op appointment and I'm going to talk to her about this, because I don't think this diet plan is realistic or fair.

Hey. I think you made a little error in your post so I just fixed that for you, k?

At 5 days post op a sleeved stomach cannot handle the digestion process. You just had approximately 70 - 80% of your stomach removed! You have very little stomach acid to aid in digestion. Surely your doctor explained this during your initial consultation when he explained the various procedures. An RNY patient has a more complex surgery but they do not have most of their stomach removed. They follow different rules than we do. I am surprised that you are hungry after 5 days. It happens but it is not common. I am sure that will pass. Are you drinking your 65 grams of protein? Are u drinking enough water? It is very difficult to drink enough at this point but u have to do the best you can. Ask your doctor about head hunger and the grieving process. About 2 weeks after surgery the grieving kicked in for me. I cried for several weeks because I was missing certain things. Green beans, believe it or not. Of course nachos etc too. It might be helpful to keep a journal. I also began seeing a psychologist before surgery. I knew if I did not deal with my food issues I would never be successful. Hang in there! You are not the first person to be frustrated early on.

None of this is impossible but things will not be normal....you have to just put that in your head, and make things work. Pastas and breads are part of why we got big to begin with. Stick to proteins, veggies/fruits, and dairy....slowly add breads and pastas back in. Best of luck!

I believe the original poster has long since abandoned us....see page 2 I believe...yet this thread continues with much good advice!

  • 3 weeks later...

This thread has cracked me up!!

I'm 3 days post op and have not felt any real hunger pangs as I would have normally had prior to surgery. The liquid stage does suck but from what I gather from others..this too shall pass! So I'll just enjoy my protein shakes and jello, while also enjoying the fact that I've lost 6lbs since Monday's surgery!! ????

Keep after it and profit mightily.

I'm just two months out and I feel like a new man.

I can't even begin to imagine how much better I'll feel at the 1 year point.
