Hey all,

I am two days out from surgery. I have zero appetite. I've sipped on a clear Protein Shake all day, but have little appetite for anything else. Is this normal? My husband is getting upset that I am not eating, but I literally have no desire for food right now.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.
Heather

Two days post op? The only things you need to be worried about are liquid and Protein. I didn't feel like eating for a week after surgery.

Right, I barely have any desire to drink anything. I did find this awesome nectar Protein drink, but I can't get any more until next Friday (gotta love payday and sample packs). :) Water makes me a bit nauseous but I've heard that's normal.

I told my husband he needs to relax, that I'm ok, but he's a bit freaked out that I don't want anything.

Drinking sucks. Do it anyways. Go for an ounce or two every 15 minutes. I drank diluted Gatorade because it was all I could tolerate. Don't worry about Protein for the next week or so, just keep yourself hydrated. That's really all that matters. Trust me, if you had this surgery, you have enough padding that you won't starve without food. ;)

You can live a month + without food. You won't make it a week with out Water. You just tell him that. Keep on the fluids.

Perfectly normal, but keep sipping anyway.

I'm two days post op, as well... I'm getting down homemade chicken broth and Water... that's about it. I had a sugar free popsicle yesterday, too. No desire to eat.

I am 17 days postop and have no desire to eat and I force myself to drink my Water. It is getting easier to eat/drink my Protein Drinks and chicken broth by the company Unjury are awesome and have 21grams of Protein I think per scoop.

I am a nurse and know fluids are important so I don't end up in the hospital with acute kidney failure or altered mental status for electrolytes being off.

Sip, sip, sip. Take care of your self

HUH? 2 days post op????eat anything??? omg I didn't eat anything for 2 weeks post op. you are suppose to be on just liquids, gradually to pureed then mashed no solid foods for 4 weeks, I am confused? I still have just Soup (half cup) for lunch and or scrambled egg |||( half an egg) for supper I just have my Protein shakes as my staple, greek yogurt....pureed chicken and veggies. liquids and Protein drinks are your priority and its hard to get that down for first 2 weeks.

I am going to disagree with some folks above who counseled you not to worry about Protein. My surgeon had the opposite advice. He said it was absolutely critical to get in enough Protein as soon as possible. I credit his skill and following his advice for the ease of my recovery.

Even if you don't feel like it do your best to get as much protein and Fluid in as soon as possible. He said barring major complication so, there is no physical reason we cannot consume three premier Protein shakes in one day. It's just a matter of sipping all day until you get it in.

Don't wait until you feel like it or even remember to do it. Set up a schedule and sip, sip, sip.

You will feel so much better if you stay hydrated and get plenty of protein.

You are supposed to follow your doctor's orders. Different doctor's have different rate of progression back to regular food.

At 2 days post op I was on liquids only anyway? No food so I didn't have meals really... Just different types of liquids- those with Protein and those without.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
