Protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I am post op day 3 today and I am starting on Protein Shakes. How long is it supposed to take me to drink on 11 oz pre made Protein Shake? I do have some discomfort when I swallow but nothing that is too tough to deal with.

There is no rush on it. Just aim for staying hydrated and meeting your Protein and fluid goals. It may take some time to work up to meeting the bare minimum requirements.

It depends upon how much inflammation you have in your stomach which leads to how quickly fluids pass through it - you may have only the equivalent of a soda or cocktail straw sized passage going through so things may go fairly slowly, or you may more of a passage the size of a marking pen where Fluid pass fairly quickly. My wife, when she went through this years ago could only move her nominal stomach capacity of 4 oz of Protein shake through in a sitting of a half hour or so, while I could pass a cup and a half or more of fluids through in that time - both were within the "normal" range of expected results that first week or two according to the doc.

Sip as much as you are comfortable drinking for now - guidelines from different docs vary from sipping an ounce every five minutes to an ounce every fifteen minutes; even at that lower five minute guideline, that would take you an hour to drink that shake. If you can do it quicker than that comfortably, that's no problem, but likewise it's no worry if it takes longer for now.

I tend to take a long time drinking mine. I tend to drink half in 1 - 2 hours.

Then I will drink the rest later in the day.

I do get through two of the 30g, 11oz Premier Protein drinks per day.

When I get to my limit, I feel like a could burp or gag, so I know my stomach must be close to full.

I am also taking sips of Water, Soup, tea and clear Isopure, as well as biting on my SF popsicles throughout the day spread out. I am tracking my input on myfitnesspal.

I am one week, one day post-op.

@@thisfathasgot2go we had our surgery at about the same time, it appears. I was looking to see how far off or on track I've been with my Protein Drinks, etc. Meh, I'm slacking. I need to get in another shake. I had a hernia repair though and I think that pain is slowing me down a bit. Good info though!

Are you on MyFitnessPal? You can see what I eat there. I am not pushing it. I am staying on the prescribed menu by my NUT. The stuff ain't the best tasting, but its tolerable and I try to mix it up a bit, adding PB2 powder to the Premier vanilla, adding some cinnamon to the butternut squash Soup, etc. Trying stuff warm, trying it cold, etc.

With the two Premier drinks, I can get 60g of Protein right there. (22oz liquid)

Then adding the yogurt, it's an additional 12g. Protein (5 oz liquid)

The half a bottle of clear Isopure is 20oz protein. (10 oz liquid)

I add Water to try and get my total liquid intake to 64oz (10 oz liquid)

Creamy Soups are negligible protein unless I add powdered Isopure. (4 oz liquid)

Tea (4 oz liquid)

Prune (diluted) (4 oz liquid)

Various sips of Water throughout day (8 oz liquid)

This is pretty much my goal daily.

I'm just finishing one as I type this. It took me about 10 minutes to drink 11 ounces. I have virtually no restriction on liquids, but big time on mush. It takes me a half an hour to eat 3 ounces of cottage cheese or refried Beans.

My VSG was 10/6/15...

I had my VSG on 10/12, so I guess I am day 5 post op. Today I drank my shake in about 30 minutes.

5th day out here.

I take my time and work through 3 a day.

I'll sip on i for a while....pu the lid back on and it goes back into the fridge for a while.

I'm sorta behind today. I've had 1.5 of the 3.

I've been more pushy on my Water.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
